Hell or High Water (2016) Movie Review

A main activity I enjoy is watching movies and this is one of the things I originally wanted to blog about and review when I started readrantrockandroll. I have definitely completed more book reviews, but I have scads of movies to talk about and I thought I’d start out with a few that I really enjoyed this year. This review will be for the movie Hell or High Water which was released in 2016.

My Summary: Toby Howard (Chris Pine) and his brother Tanner (Ben Foster) who has recently been released out of prison, need to raise enough money to pay off the reverse mortgage on their mother’s ranch. She has just recently passed away, and now that oil was discovered on the ranch, they need to secure the future of Toby’s sons and ex wife by raising $43,000 dollars to pay it off. After they make two robberies, Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) and his partner deputy (Gil Birmingham) try to stop them from committing their final crime.

My Review:

I couldn’t wait to watch Hell or High Water after seeing the cast. Plus, the fact that it’s a neo-western crime thriller totally interested me.

ec51748523208bd19640d5fe31992134.jpgThe main actors here are Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham. Every single one of them is perfect for their part. From the moment this movie got started, I was on the edge of my seat. Chris Pine (Toby) and Ben Foster (Tanner) play a perfect brotherly pair and the relationship between the two is genuine. Toby and Tanner’s family hasn’t been problem free and they’ve experienced financial difficulties since the beginning. They’re going to make sure that the family will finally have a stable and secure financial future, and for the first time, the plaque of poorness will be in the past. As they begin to rob banks to collect the money, it appears that their plan is perfect, until Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) comes into the picture. I absolutely loved Jeff Bridges character and the banter between him and his partner (Gil Birmingham) is a fun and comical addition. Marcus isn’t going to let this one go and he’s on to their plan. He’s going to find the people responsible for the bank robberies of Texas Midland Banks. hell-or-high-water-image-3.jpg

Overall, I loved this movie. I was totally surprised at the ending and felt full of emotion during and after. I get teary eyed just watching the trailer that I’ve shared here today even though I’ve seen the movie multiple times. I love the way Toby and Tanner will do anything for each other no matter what. It’s a brotherly bond that can’t be broken.

“Then why in the hell did you agree to do it?”Toby

Cause you asked, little brother” Tanner

My Rating: A+
