This Week’s Pick:

Foster The People

“Pumped Up Kicks”

It’s hard to believe this song will be 8 years old this year. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it and this incredibly catchy tune is still a fave in 2018! A lot of people originally thought that the song’s dark lyrics encouraged violence, but it’s not true. The song was written to bring awareness to the subject.

“I like to write about real-life topics, and I like to write about different walks of life. For me, that song was really an observation about something that’s happening in the youth culture these days. I guess I wanted to reveal that internal dialogue of a kid who doesn’t have anywhere to turn, and I think the song has kind of done its job. I think people are talking about it, and it’s become a point of conversation, which I think is a really healthy thing.”

Mark Foster

Lyrics-

Robert’s got a quick hand
He’ll look around the room, he won’t tell you his plan
He’s got a rolled cigarette, hanging out his mouth he’s a cowboy kid
Yeah found a six shooter gun
In his dad’s closet hidden oh in a box of fun things, I don’t even know what
But he’s coming for you, yeah he’s coming for you All the other kids with the pumped up kicks

You’d better run, better run, out run my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, out run my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet

Daddy works a long day
He be coming home late, he’s coming home late
And he’s bringing me a surprise
‘Cause dinner’s in the kitchen and it’s packed in ice
I’ve waited for a long time
Yeah the slight of my hand is now a quick pull trigger
I reason with my cigarette
And say your hair’s on fire, you must have lost your wits, yeah

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, out run my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, out run my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, out run my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, out run my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, out run my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet

This is a fun song and I feel a little sheltered not knowing alternative meanings of the lyrics. I always accepted it as a high-energy tune from FTP. Sometimes, it’s just better not having conspiratorial thoughts about everything.

    Eight years? That’s crazy.

    1. The “outrun my gun” lyric was what upset people, but the song wasn’t meant to condone violence. I have to admit, I always look up song meanings, lol. They’re like stories and sometimes the real people and events behind them fascinate me.

It is insane that it’s 8 years old! Where does time go. 😉💖
