I was chatting with my friend Nel about some of the music we grew up with and some of the artists our parents listened to, when Phil Collins came up. I ❤ Phil Collins. I started thinking about some of my favorite songs and ended up going with “Take Me Home.” It’s hard to believe this song came out when I was just 9 years old, which explains why it’s so nostalgic to me. Here it is…

Phil Collins

“Take Me Home”

The song isn’t about a man returning home as many think, but the lyrics actually refer to a patient in a mental institution. Apparently, Phil Collins got his inspiration from the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Lyrics:

Take that look of worry
I’m an ordinary man
They don’t tell me nothing
So I find out what I can
There’s a fire that’s been burning
Right outside my door
I can’t see but I feel it
And it helps to keep me warm
So I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind

Seems so long I’ve been waiting
Still don’t know what for
There’s no point escaping
I don’t worry anymore
I can’t come out to find you
I don’t like to go outside
They can’t turn off my feelings
Like they’re turning off a light
But I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind
Oh I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind

So take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home
Oh Lord, ’cause I’ve been a prisoner all my life
And I can say to you

Take that look of worry, mine’s an ordinary life
Working when it’s daylight
And sleeping when it’s night
I’ve got no far horizons
And I wish upon a star
They don’t think that I listen
Oh but I know who they are
And I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind
Oh I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind

So take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home, oh lord
Well I’ve been a prisoner all my life
And I can say to you

But I don’t remember
Take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home…

  1. Love this one.
I’m amazed by some songs. We just take it for granted we know what they’re about only to find out later the writer/ singer was thinking along an entirely different track!
Love me some Phil Collins 💚
    Have a good week.

      1. Yeah, the song “Groovy Kind of Love” goes down as one of the worst of all times. But then, you have “Coming in the Air Tonight” and “Against All Odds” that are just iconic and timeless. Anyway, thanks for the memory!

Yes! I know this one! I had no idea about the patient in the mental institution part though. It’s always fascinating where artist’s get inspiration for their lyrics and how they can be interpreted with multiple meanings. Great share! 🙂

The Air Tonight is another one by him that I love, too. So haunting.

Great pick, thanks for sharing 🙂
