-Music Monday-
This meme was created by Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek. You pick a song that you really like and share it on Monday. I love this meme and look forward to sharing a new song every week!
Yesterday for Shabby Sunday I talked about an old vintage songbook that I still have from 1975. It belonged to my grandfather and he used to sing songs from it when I was a kid. I was reflecting back on some of the old music from his time and remembered how he mentioned multiple times that music had changed. He wasn’t pleased with very many new artists and when he didn’t have his favorites to listen to, he resolved to listening to only newer artists like Carole King or Amy Grant. After chatting with my friend and author David Dowdy, we got on the subject of music and how much it has changed. I got to thinking about this song by Cake, because in the video they’re walking around asking many different people to listen to their song and to give their opinion on it. Everyone seems to have their own tastes and there were some really funny reactions.
Cake
“Short Skirt Long Jacket”
I personally do feel more attached to the music from the 80’s and 90’s era because it’s music I grew up with and music that connects with many memories. So I have to ask all you music lovers what you think about new music. Are you more attached to older familiar music, or do you still connect with just as many new songs? In your opinion, does music in general have the same level of talent it once had?
Lyrics:
I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what’s best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes
I want a girl with the right allocations
Who’s fast and thorough
And sharp as a tack
She’s playing with her jewelry
She’s putting up her hair
She’s touring the facility
And picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnng jacket……
I want a girl who gets up early
I want a girl who stays up late
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity
Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass
She is fast and thorough
And sharp as a tack
She’s touring the facility
And picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnnng…. lonnng jacket
I want a girl with a smooth liquidation
I want a girl with good dividends
At Citibank we will meet accidentally
We’ll start to talk when she borrows my pen
She wants a car with a cupholder arm rest
She wants a car that will get her there
She’s changing her name from Kitty to Karen
She’s trading her MG for a white Chrysler LeBaron
I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnnggggggggg jacket

LOL. You crack me up, Jenn. The word that comes to mind to describe you is eclectic and I mean that as the highest compliment. That song is awesome! My only criticism is the na-na-na parts (as someone on the video mentioned), but I still like it. 😎

Lol thanks, Bonnie! 😉 I’m glad you like the song. Someone in the video said that very same thing. This one makes me just want to get up and dance like the man on the street. 😉 ❤ Hope all is well with you.

Like this song and Never there. As for music, I mean it’s evolved for sure. I’m not as old as you are but I think the 90s had the best music. The stuff off today is alright but just not on the same level and a lot of it sounds the same as everything else; lacking in originality I guess is the best way to describe it. But I also think that’s the beauty of music as well; watching it change. Anyway, great share 😁

I love Never There too! That’s another great album. I agree that today’s music doesn’t seem to be on the same level, but there are many artists that I do love like Foster The People and Imagine Dragons to name a few. Thanks for your input! ❤

Loved the different reactions in the video and the several people that were really into it with dancing etc. lol. My thought is it depends on the genre( is that the right word for music?) anyway, I love the newly released country songs and artists. I think a lot of the new music is catchy too. I like to give it a chance. Even rap sometimes can be fun depending on who the artist is. I think thats why I like watching the shows like ‘The Voice’ because of the variety of music and the new talents. I love the oldies too. 60’s and 70’s. (now I’m showing my age, oops!) One just never knows! Awesome post Jen! 🙂

I agree with what you’re saying too. I’m not a huge fan of country, but do have some that I love like Rascal Flatts. Like you, I’m willing to give anything a try! Thanks 🙂 ❤

That video is hilarious! You could do the same type of thing with books and see how everyone reacts differently too. 🙂 I have to say I’m with you on loving my oldies and not as much newer stuff but there are still new songs out there that grab my attention too.
