I discovered Flower Friday last year while visiting Lorilin@Bugbugbooks and have been having a blast sharing some flower pictures and information. Please check out Lorilin’s blog if you haven’t already for book reviews and more!
Today’s Flower is:
I had plans to get better pictures this morning, but the weather hasn’t been cooperating. These are one variety of iris that we have growing. Sadly, these are about done blooming for the season.
I love this color, but my absolute favorite is black. 🙂
The iris’s mythology dates back to Ancient Greece, when the goddess Iris, who personified the rainbow (the Greek word for iris), acted as the link between heaven and earth. It’s said that purple irises were planted over the graves of women to summon the goddess Iris to guide them in their journey to heaven. Irises became linked to the French monarchy during the Middle Ages, eventually being recognized as their national symbol, the fleur-de-lis. – Teleflora.com
These are super easy to grow and require little care. They come back year after year.
