Music Monday: P.O.D “Youth of the Nation” & Blestenation “Cruel Summer” from “Blue Crush” [movie]

-Music Monday-

This meme was created by Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek. You pick a song that you really like and share it on Monday.

This week I chose a few songs from the movie “Blue Crush” with Kate Bosworth and the ever so awesome Michelle Rodriguez. In the movie, Anne Marie (Bosworth) is living with a few roommates and her younger sister who she’s responsible for. Anne Marie has plans to surf in the Rip Masters surf competition, but she has some underlying fears she’s dealing with. Then she meets Mat, a professional quarterback and begins to lose track. Between work, making rent, keeping her sister in school, training, and a new romance, she struggles to stay the course.

I love the cast and there are real-life professional women surfers in it. The movie’s always been a favorite and these songs remind me of the beach and summer which we’re in the middle of right now.

“Youth Of The Nation”

Last day of the rest of my life
I wish I would have known cause I’d have kissed my momma goodbye.
I didn’t tell her that I loved her or how much cared or thank my
Pops for all the talks and all the wisdom he shared.
Unaware I just did what I always do.
Everyday the same routine before I skate off to school
But who knew that this day wasn’t like the rest,
Instead of takin the test I took two to the chest.

Call me blind but I didn’t see it comin and
Everybody was runnin but I couldn’t
Hear nothin, except gun blast, it happened so fast
I didn’t really know this kid though I sat by him in class.
Maybe this kid was reachin’ out for love or
Maybe for a moment he forgot who he was or
Maybe this kid just wanted to be hugged,
Whatever it was I know it’s because

We are, We are (We are) the youth of the nation (repeat) x4

Little Suzie she was only twelve
She was given the world with every chance to excel
Hang with the boys and hear the stories they tell
She might act kinda proud but no respect for herself

She finds love in all the wrong places
The same situations but just different faces.
Changed up her pace since her daddy left her
Too bad he never told her she deserved much better.

Johnny boy always played the fool,
He broke all the rules so you would think he was cool.
He was never really one of the guys
No matter how hard he tried,
Often thought of suicide
It’s kinda hard when you ain’t got no friends,
He put his life to an end they might remember him then.
You cross a line and there is no turnin back
He told the world how he felt with the sound of a gat.

Chorus x4

Who’s to blame for the life that tragedies claim?
No matter what you say it won’t take away the pain
That I feel inside, I’m tired of all the lies
Don’t nobody know why
It’s the blind leadin’ the blind.
Guess that’s the way that the story goes,
Will it ever make sense somebody’s gotta know,
There’s gotta be more to life than this,
There’s got to be more to everything
I thought exists

We are, We are the youth of the nation (x2)
We are, We are, (We are, We are) the youth of the nation (x6)
We are the youth of the nation (x3)
The youth of the nation (x3)

“Cruel Summer”

Now we all know summertime is a bummer with no duckets.
Honeys want money exposed like they tummy is.
The one time you can just sit…Right there.
No school to not go to and skip.
Living without worry.
Sunday to Monday we on (Eh).
Gritty like how the original verse in this song be.
Negatively M.B.C. speak.
It’s aiight though.
No thing to make the flow clean.
Surfs up.
Smash and break and throw things.
Break night.
It aint like its snowing.
But get blizzy with W.E.
MBug on beats and crush freaks.
Runnin with the summer till we puttin up the tree.
Sunny beach.
Pumpin the bananarama.
The banginest bodies have bikinis on.
I’m grabbin em.
Unraveling the straps when I get her back to the cabin son.
Summer sucks without at least one of these.

It’s a cruel,cruel summer.
Leaving me here on my own.
It’s a cruel (it’s a cruel)
Cruel summer.
Now you’ve gone.

So tell me to ease out
Better to move or doubt
Which one you’ll play about
Find a chick to get out

So I’m walking across the street bumpin MBug tunes.
When we spot three lovely jewels.
Sweet ladies.
Poodles in M.B.U.G. sayin “aint you them kids from that rap group?”
Please……..let us have the honors of remaining annonymous for the time being.
Later we’ll bust a rhyme for ya.
Whats the matter?
Having a bad day?
They looked at me with sad faces and began to say to me.
“Hot summer streets and the pavements are burning.I sit around”
I said “you gotta be kidding baby summer is the joint…CHU THUNKIN!!!??”
“Trying to smile but the air is so heavy and dry”
Pffffffff….I dont give a (ding!)
Need a new rush?
Lemmie get a hold of slap back with the new stuff.
“Strange voices are sayin”
strange voices!!?? what they say to ya?
(what did they say?)
“Things I can’t understand”
Tuff luck
“It’s too close for comfort. This heat has right out of the hand”
So the Bleste grabbed em dragged em to the sea, splashed em in and thats it.

It’s a cruel,cruel summer.
Leaving me here on my own.
It’s a cruel (it’s a cruel)
Cruel summer.
Now you’re gone.

So tell me to ease out
Better to move or doubt
Which one you’ll play about
Find a chick to get out

Verse three

Now we all know summertime ain’t gonna flow with no doe and no broad and bodega sto’s with no no’.
The waves overflow fa sho.
So hop on top the longboard and roll and don’t go home till they all gone hooknose.
Ya know…straight bodyboard struggling to get a shore.
Watch them girls ride.
Let em whip ocean ripples.
When it hits, the tide has got a chicken soaked.
Regardless the sharpness of these broads sorta like moses.
They easily pull it apart kid.
Them some sweet ladies.
Keep letting em kill it.
Like some true dank
No way you can’t feel it.
They comin up skimpy with the coverup.
I got a long joint for ya.
MBug cover songs.
Do what summer does and shine..
Bright like the view of the sky inside the pipeline

It’s a cruel, cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It’s a cruel, cruel summer
Now you’re gone
You’re not the only one
It’s a cruel, cruel summer
Leaving me
Leaving me here on my own
It’s a cruel, cruel summer
Now you’re gone

I never saw Blue Crush but I still listen to P.O.D.s Youth of the Nation regularly. It’s a great piece with lyrics that still have the power to move me after all of this time.
Dating myself but I used to listen to the Bananarama version of Cruel Summer when I was a teen.

  2. Nice share, I’m familiar with both songs but haven’t watched the movie myself… funny thing was I saw it one night and thought about it but probably ended up reading and stopping my channel surfing. LOL

I liked the lyrics in the first song video by P.O.D. I like the second song with the girls doing the chorus. Really different. Of course you gotta know these are not from my generation of music! Lol. Great post jen! 🎶
