On January 12th, 2018, I shared my book review for Thyroid Healing by Anthony William, and I also shared my story about how I’ve struggled with anxiety and autoimmune disease. Hello, friends! I’ve finally made it back for a Thyroid Healing update. I’m about a month late and I apologize for that. Things have been crazy and with our schedule, I’m trying very hard to keep up with everything.

It’s been a year!

January 7th marked one year on the Medical Medium Thyroid Healing Protocol. I’ve been gluten, dairy, canola, egg, and pork free for over a year. That’s crazy!

So, on December 18th, 2018, I saw my endocrinologist. I was feeling pretty good and obviously had no idea that my labs were going to show…

TSH – 11.86

FT4 – 1.57

I was quite shocked! In a matter of six weeks, my TSH went way up, but my FT4 is now back to normal. I’m finally out of a dangerous hyperthyroid state, but possibly heading toward hypothyroidism again. My body is basically requesting more thyroid hormone.  My endocrinologist felt that I was probably not going to be able to make it on just the 137mcg of Synthroid daily. We talked about how I was feeling and I expressed how happy I’ve been to not have palpitations, anxiety, or any of those revved up symptoms I was having. He proceeded to tell me that I’m obviously very sensitive to thyroid hormone replacement and that all he wants to do is keep me on the 137mcg daily while swapping in 150mcg two days out of the week. I’ll be going back to see him in March and we can reevaluate.

I’m not going to lie: I was a little bummed. My thyroid just isn’t ready to pick up the slack, but that’s okay. I knew this going into the protocol because my thyroid is heavily damaged. It’s been swelled and shrunken repeatedly over the last twelve years or more. I’ve heard people vlogging about their Medical Medium protocol progress say that it took them three+ years to heal. It’s been just over a year for me (on this protocol) and I’ve already come a long way. The most important thing to me is keeping the viruses in my body at bay so I don’t have to experience any further autoimmune disease. I’m hopeful.

Now, with that said, I’m feeling very good. I noticed some fatigue, chills, and muscle weakness in the evenings for about a week just after seeing my doc, but it didn’t last and it was very mild. I’m ecstatic to have all the horrible crazy-person symptoms gone. I really felt wacko and mildly psychotic when I was hyperthyroid from taking too much medication. 😂 I’ll take a little fatigue over feeling crazy anytime. To be able to sleep all night long without anxiety and feel rested in the morning is fantastic. I’m sleeping a straight 9PM to 5AM and occasionally even fall asleep just after 8PM at night. The pesky palpitations have ceased for the most part. I seem to have a pattern where I have one or two the day after I take 150mcg. Isn’t that interesting?

My weight is now maintained which is perfect because I don’t have anymore weight to lose. Things have finally settled down. For the first time in like forever, thinking about loosing weight is a thing of the past. I’m now on the low end of my BMI and steady. I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t stand having a relationship with my scale. I just don’t want to deal with it anymore!

What am I doing now?

As I mentioned last time, I’m on protocol C which is the most in depth. I’ve added in some other stuff. Here’s what I’m doing…

  • I’m still drinking a little over 16 ounces of celery juice EVERY SINGLE MORNING a half hour before I eat breakfast.
  • I have the Thyroid Healing smoothie every morning, but rather than use mango every day, I’m subbing in cherries and blueberries every other day.
  • I drink the Thyroid Healing juice every night which includes celery, apple, ginger, and parsley. I also add in a thumb size of fresh turmeric root.
  • I haven’t had gluten, dairy, pork, eggs, canola, or any of the other problematic foods mentioned in the book. Very rarely I’ve had organic corn, but very rare and in small amounts.
  • Lemon water twice a day. Ginger water at least once a day.
  • I’ve used many of the recipes from all three books by Anthony William. I’m now reading his 4th book, Liver Rescue.
  • I’m still taking the Hawaiian spirulina, liquid zinc, evening primrose oil, L-lysine, ashwagandha, and all of my other usual supplements including olive leaf extract and selenium. I’m back to using some of my Perque supplements including quercetin, choline citrate, EPA/DHA, and magnesium. I still haven’t started cat’s claw, but I will soon. I’m also using turmeric twice a day.
  • I have a tiny piece of real licorice every day or so.
  • I’m still using my essential oils once or twice a week now, mainly frankincense and lavender in the bath.
  • I’m still doing Epsom salt baths roughly 3 times a week. I look forward to this about every other day. It’s the best medicine!
  • I’m still spending more time practicing meditation and in prayer. I’m also working on emotional healing.
  • Sleep is huge and I’m still getting plenty of it.

You might be wondering why I added my Perque supplements back in, specifically the quercetin. I’ll tell you the story…

At a visit to Costco over two weeks ago or so, I purchased some Organic Sunrise Energy Granola Bars. Now, I used to eat these all the time before I started this protocol, and I thought it would be a nice treat. The truth is, I spaced something off. Although there isn’t any added gluten in these bars, they’re processed in a facility that also processes wheat. I didn’t look at the package until it was too late. I developed a horrible migraine and wanted to vomit within an hour of eating one of these. I was shocked because I haven’t had a headache like that since I first started this protocol! I almost didn’t know how to handle it. I don’t know for sure why it happened, but at this point, I realized that my body is obviously nowhere near healed. I believe my gut is still damaged and I simply can’t handle these foods. So, I’ve added back in the quercetin because it helps with tissue repair. I probably should’ve never stopped taking it. We’ll see how that goes.

I also added back in the Perque Adreno Distress Guard. This is specifically for the adrenal glands and stress management. I think this has helped me tremendously. I’ve had adrenal fatigue in the past and after being hyperthryoid for half of 2018, I figure my adrenals could use a showering of rhodiola. I’ve been back on this for about a month and I’m feeling well balanced–able to handle stress better. I just want to keep my body quiet like it is right now and stay at peace.

I’ve also been working on emotional healing. It’s no secret that until you heal your mind, your body can’t truly heal either. I’ve heard this before, but didn’t really take it seriously. I have a long way to go and feel like it’s easy to forgive the people that hurt us in life, but the scars can remain for some time. Self-love is also something I never really paid attention to so, I’m learning.

So, the plan is to continue on with this protocol and to also keep gut-loading as much nutrition as I can. After making it through the holidays without one single slip up, I’m in this for the long haul. I’ll continue the juice, smoothies, and occasional soups that I’m eating now.

I took a little break from exercising over the holidays and now I’m ready to start that back up again. I’m feeling really good about 2019. It’s going to be a good year.

  3. Great update because at least you are feeling a lot better. A lot of things take trial and error, hopefully the doctor can help you make sure you’re eventually getting the correct doses of medication in order for things to even out! Take care!

  4. First off I want to say I love Epsom salt baths 😀 They are so relaxing! And they make a salt that one of the scents is eucalyptus which is my favorite ❤

    Congrats on keeping all this up for a full year! That is crazy! Did it become easier as the year went on? Is it a habit now? I have had thyroid problems since I was a teenager and I have been on a pill for bout 13 years. Luckily the pill has been enough to keep everything normal and stable. I hope yours doesn't take the full 3 years to heal!

    1. Aren’t they? Honestly, I’m not sure what I’d do without them. Thank you so much! It’s definitely a habit. I’m surely not going to screw anything up now that it’s been this long. I’m 100% positive I’m better without the gluten so, I may never be able to have it. It really isn’t hard, although, I enjoy the smells coming from the oven lol. My family still eats pretty regular, but we limit gluten if we can. I Time will tell I’m ever able to try it again.

      I’m sorry to hear you have thyroid problems as well. I do wish I could just take a pill and feel better. I remember having good times in between though.   5. You are so inspiring. Honestly. I know I said it on one of your previous updates but I need to try this. I’m on Synthroid as well but I need to do more. I’m glad you are doing better and I hope it continues to improve. A year is an amazing accomplishment. Congrats ❤ xoxoxo

    1. Wow, Dee. How kind for you to say that. Thank you! You’ll have to let me know if you decide to try it. He has three different protocols, but all of them cut out the main foods I mention. I feel that it’s helped me, but everyone’s different. I can say that there are many testimonies if you search vlogs on YouTube. I was at the point where I had nothing to lose and I’d already been trying so hard to do the right things with my health. It just wasn’t enough for me. Fortunately, this has produced results.   6. You’ve done so well on this, Jenn! I’m pretty sure that I couldn’t have done it since I’m terrible at sticking with things. I’ve done pretty well staying away from gluten, but that’s about all…At least when I had my thyroid tested in Dec, it was within normal range. I’m really proud of you! xoxo ❤

    1. Thanks, Steph! It surely hasn’t been easy. 😂 I do miss some of my favorite foods, especially bread lol. I just don’t do well sick. I’m too much of a wuss I guess lol. I really just want to feel good and really hope that one day I can put all of this behind me once and for all.

  7. I can’t believe it’s already been a year, favorite M! I remember the first post like it was yesterday. You impressed me then and you continue to impress me now. I have a silly question- do you eat any other foods other than the juices, smoothies, and soups? I have always tested normal for thyroid, but I’ve just noticed heart palpitations in the last couple days. I’ve read and I know there can be many causes…number one being stress and I’ve been super stressed and not sleeping nearly enough for some time. I need to take your example to heart – with all you have going on, you are making sure to get 8 hours of sleep, so I should be able to make that commitment to myself, too. Now to get the kittens to cooperate. 😂 I’ve done great about exercise, and that is definitely helping, but I know sleep is playing a part. Oh, and I’m going to be more mindful with meditation again, thanks to you, and also try to take some Epsom salt baths! Thank you for sharing all your inspiration with us, my dear, smart, resourceful friend. ♥️

    1. Isn’t it crazy how time flies? I do eat other foods, but it’s always basically fruits and veggies. I’m planning a post to share what I eat in a full day very soon! I hope that will help. I’ve actually tried to add in organic gluten free cereals, but they upset my digestion so, I’m strictly raw now. I do still eat nuts too.

      Sorry to hear about your palpitations. Such a pain! I will say that stress is a big one for me too. If I have a really stressful day, I will notice that they creep up on my in the evenings. The adreno distress guard works wonders for that. It helps the body deal with stress. You can read about that on Perque’s website. Also hydration is really important. I’ve learned to ‘over’ hydrate, meaning I drink at least 3 quarts of fresh filtered water a day and spread it out evenly throughout the day. I’ve also learned how important magnesium is. This can stop palpitations all together. It seems pretty easy to become magnesium deficient too, even with a good diet. So, the Epsom baths help a lot. Sometimes I notice if I’m not breathing right (laughing a lot, etc.) I can have a few skipped beats. My cardiologist has reiterated that they are almost always harmless, but I just flat-out don’t like having them. I’m very happy to have them down to a minimum. I can say that anytime my mom has thyroid imbalances, she has them too so, I think it’s fairly common with thyroid problems as well. Sleep is huge too! I’m reading this book called Sleep Smarter by Shawn Stevenson. Check him out on YouTube–what an amazing story he has to share regarding sleep.

      1. ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ I meant to mention I take an adrenal stress pill that has some slight sleep benefits too? It’s from a local company, Gaia. I noticed that they also have a day time one, so I’m going to slowly add that in, too. I only notice my palpitations in the evenings too! I was wondering if I’m just too busy during the day to notice, but what you said makes sense. I understand why you don’t have them. They can trigger that biofeedback loop and add to stress and worry. I will check out Sleep Smarter for sure. I am pretty sure my main culprit is my blog. 😂 Thank you for sharing so much of you with all of us. ♥️ xoxo

        1. Oh, okay! I use Gaia as well–Olive leaf extract and Ashwaghanda. Wonderful company that I personally trust. I use the liquid capsules.

          It could be stress. Lol. I had multiple docs say that during the day you just don’t feel them, but I do feel strays. For me it was happening when I would lie down at night too. I know what you mean though. I’m not sure what your schedule is, but my oldest son is going through some problems and our doc says it’s screen time. My son edits and produces videos online for his job and spends an awful lot of time in front of a screen in addition to social media. We’re working on it. For me, I’ve wanted to let my blog go multiple times, but can’t bring myself to do it yet. So, this year I’ve let go of ARC’s for the most part and also deadlines. I’m not taking author requests either. I just can’t! Our schedule is just too hard to keep up with. Feeling pretty good about 2019 though.

          I surely hope things settle down for you. You’ll have to let me know if the adrenal support helps. The Adreno Gaurd that I take is instructed by my holistic doc and he has me take it at 10am and a second dosing at 1pm. I’m not sure what Gaia has, but I’m intrigued!

I know you said it could take up to 3 years of more to completely heal your body, but it looks like you are on the right track. I am so happy for all the positive things that have happened over the past year. It is your diligence and sticktoitiveness that has brought you this far. I will continue to pray for your healing both physical and emotional. We may have never met Jen, but you are one of the strongest women I know.   9. Grats! I should check this book out. I have the opposite, hypothyroidism :/ family gift I could done without, and I have my fingers crossed my younger sister doesn’t follow the pattern :/ That’s awesome that you’re feeling better! Hope it continues to improve for you! Medical issues succckkk! Especially chronic ones. Celery juice… uhh… Not sure I could do that!

    Sounds like the foods would be compatible with my hepatic diet. It’s fruit, vegs, and fish. I tease the hepatic dietician that she’s turned me into an otter! The liver book sounds like something I need to read too. I have NASH, and am in a clinical trial for it, testing a medication. I was one stage from cirrohsis(?) when I finally went to Dr to figure out what was going on. 😶 Thankfully I can still heal the liver. I’m interested to see your daily meal plan.

    What we need is a reset button… Haha, reset the entire body system.

    1. That’s what I have too! Well, I was just overmedicated for most of last year lol. You should definitely pick up Liver Rescue! It’s chock-full, I promise. You will learn so much. I just finished it recently and still amazed. You’re diet sounds great! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! ♥️

      1. You have NASH too, or hypothyroidism, but they had your meds too high?
        Speaking of… gods be good, one time I accidentally got our elder cat’s hyperthyroid med on my hand (it was an ear ointment). Even though it was a tiny amount and I immediately washed my hand, I ended up sleeping for 16 hours straight. 😐

        1. No, I don’t have any liver issues really, other than wanting to get it cleared out. Anthony William talks a lot about how clogged up they are.

          I have Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism which is autoimmune.

          My goodness, I’ve heard about that happening! I remember we took care of a horse that had to have meds and we has to wear gloves. That’s wild!

  10. Glad I came across this post. I have a cyst on my thyroid of which I just had biopsied 6 days ago. Today I received an unexpected call from my Endocrinologist wanting my to come in tomorrow. I’m trying to think positive but I’m a realist and these calls are usually made if there are issues. I’m going to check this book out. Thanks for your story!

    1. I’m sorry to hear that! Definitely think positive though. My mom had the same thing happen to her and she went with RAI therapy. She now just takes synthroid and hasn’t had many issues really. Anthony William covers cysts in the book and believes that this protocol removes them, but I can’t say for sure as my diagnosis/disease is very different. I hope all goes well. Good luck and feel free to update me on how your doing if you’d like. Hoping for the best! ❤
