My thoughts:

Finding this book was like a stroke of luck for me and I was really excited to get into it. After attempting to repair my sleep habits months ago, there were still multiple things I was doing wrong.

In Sleep Smarter, author Shawn Stevenson shares his journey through healing himself from a debilitating disease. After diagnosis, he was told there wasn’t much he could do and eventually he decided to take his health into his own hands. With sleep and nutrition, Shawn was able to heal his body and become the person he thought he could never be. Shawn Stevenson teaches readers about the importance of sleep and includes 21 chapters with different strategies and tips for getting the best sleep possible.

Honestly, this book grabbed me from the very first pages. As a person who’s suffered autoimmune disease, I’ve worked very hard to balance my body over the years and getting quality sleep is a huge part of the puzzle. There were multiple things I was doing wrong; for example, getting on my phone late at night. There were also many things I could’ve been doing better. Most of these strategies are simple: get more sunlight in the morning, sleep in the right temperature, exercise, manage stress, and lower screen time in the evening. Some of the practices had never crossed my mind and I’ve discovered a wealth of knowledge after reading this book; it’s answered many questions for me. I particularly found the 14-day plan to be very helpful. Honestly, the biggest challenge I had was putting myself to bed! Instead of waiting to get tired, I get into bed at a decent early evening time and stay down for a full eight hours. Learning to stay down and meditate if I wake up in the middle of the night didn’t take long to master. I used to instantly grab my phone, but I no longer do. It’s wonderful and this book has helped me tremendously to get back on a healthy sleep schedule again.

Overall, I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs improved sleep. If you’re struggling with your health, this is definitely a book worth checking out. I’m very happy to have found it.

    My biggest problem is screen time before bed simply because it’s ‘free time’ for me. It’s a tough habit to break.

The advice to meditate if you wake up just reminded me of something a “prayer warrior” told me years ago—she believed the only reason she would wake up in the middle of the night is because she was supposed to pray about something or someone. I need to remember that when I’m laying there wide awake, wishing that I could go back to sleep. 😳🙏 Thanks for sharing, Jenn. Another great choice and helpful review! 🙂💛

  3. Wonderful review, favorite M! I have made no progress with sleep since we last chatted about it, so this was a good reminder. I coincidentally set a sleep reminder on my Fitbit today and it just showed up – on my iPad of all things rather than on the watch. I’ll have to set it a bit earlier to get me OFF the iPad.     1. Thanks, Jen! A reminder is a great idea! I’ll admit, it was hard for me at first. Having phones or other devices that can do all the tasks and follow all the social media can be a curse lol. I basically just started an 8pm rule and stuck with it.

    1. It is difficult at first, but I found that once my body became used to going to bed at a healthy time, it came easily and I fall right to sleep. I think our clocks just need to be adjusted! 😂 Thanks, Yesha.


    1. Also, those “My Pillows”? Useless. We ordered some at Christmas but would have to pay return shipping and not get our initial shipping back, so to return them we’d be out almost half what we paid. Now they’re couch pillows and we’re sticking with memory foam…

    2. Right! My phone has a blue light filter on it as well. I don’t know about you, but I noticed that screen time means more than just blue light for me. I found that I need to do something slow like read a book. Any level of brightness affects my sleep. My body is crazy sensitive though!

      I’ll have to check out the pillows. What a bummer that you couldn’t send them back! We just have regular pillows that are like memory foam which seem to work. 😊

  5. Sounds like some good tips in there. Exercise helps with so many things including being able to get to sleep. I find that sunlight is really important to my overall mental health too, and I have been using a light therapy lamp at work sometimes (my office has no windows). Because I have anxiety and depression that can mess with my sleep and then lack of sleep can make my mental health issues worse and it’s all a big cycle. Glad you were able to get some good stuff out of this book!
