I discovered Flower Friday while visiting Lorilin@Bugbugbooks. I decided to start sharing some flower pictures from our gardens along with some information about them. Please check out Lorilin’s blog if you haven’t already for book reviews and more!

This week’s share:
Wax Begonia
These are wonderful for shady areas. We have a fire pit area which has mainly hostas and ferns growing around it, so these add a warm splash of color, and they bloom all summer long.
I’ve read that these can be overwintered, but honestly haven’t tried it. We live in a cold zone and these are just treated like annuals.
This species that we buy in spring aren’t tuberous. I’d love to try tuberous begonias in the future because of the many beautiful colors available; and the flowers are much larger too.
Scientific name: Begonia x semperflorens-cultorum
Higher classification: Begoniaceae
Perennial in zones 9-10
Native to subtropical and tropical climates
Thanks for checking out Flower Friday. What are you growing this year? Let’s chat below. Have a wonderful weekend!

Beautiful! I am itching to start growing… we’re so close! 🌱

Me too! Looks like temps are warming up, but I guess they’re saying ups and downs through March. Hoping we don’t get any late freezes next month. Thanks, Lorilin! 😉

Love these, and you are so right, the best for shady spots to give some life! I have an angel wing begonia you may have seen in pics. We have kept it for a few years now. It’s special to me because my neighbor shared some of hers with us because we admired it. It also has another beautiful plant living in the same pot that I adore, too. I actually have a pic with my begonia coming up next week. 😂 It’s on my The Last review. Thanks for the idea- I think we’ll put some more begonias out in the shaded areas. Lovely share and pics, my friend! Happy weekend! ♥️

I’m going to have to search for the angel wing begonia! I have to be honest…I don’t know that much about this group. I’ve always wanted to grow some of the tuberous begonias though. Do you know if your begonias have tubers? I’ll watch out for that review! I have no doubt it’s beautiful. All of your flowers are stunning! 😍 Thanks, Jen! Have a wonderful weekend. ❤ xoxo

I think mine may be tubers and that’s why they winter so well? I am pretty sure my neighbor dug up the tuber and put it in this pot for us. Every year we fret that it’s not going to make it because of too much sun, and it comes back to us. I love that thing. It’s in some of my older pics. A pink color. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, too! ♥️ And thank you!

P.s. there is a little bit of it sprayed into my Daughter of Moloka’i pic- the one at the top with both books. ♥️

I just saw it there toward the bottom! It looks similar to the wax begonias, doesn’t it? I’m in love 💖

They do, but they hang differently- almost like they are floating! 😇

I love the leaves on this flower! And there’s something about its name I find appealing. Great choice💜

Me too! I admit, they haven’t always been favorites, but I’ve grown quite fond of them. Thanks, Jonetta. 💖

I love begonias and they do well in my front garden patch. Thanks for a reminder that spring is on the way (once the snow melts)!

Begonias were grandmas #1. Flower. She loved them. She had other favorites but this one took the prize. I’m so glad you posted this! 🙂❤️

How weird–I don’t even remember her having begonias. That shows how much I paid attention to flowers when I was a kid! 😂 Thanks!

I brought a few of mine in for the winter. They make good houseplants for a sunny window. 🙂

Neat! I want to try that. Were you able to put the them back out when it became warm again? 😉

It’s not warm yet. We had snow today. But the plants are healthy and blooming. I’ve done it a lot with geraniums. You just have to make sure when you do put them out that you don’t put them out where they get the brunt of full. sunshine.

I might have to try these out. Looking to get more flowers into the landscape this year (fingers crossed), and I definitely need some partial shade flowers because we’re surrounded by trees and there just aren’t a lot of areas that get full sun most of the day. I’d love to see the other colors available it in the tuber variety.

I hope you try them! We have them in the woods with just a tad bit of sun shining through and they bloom all summer. They’re fun. The tubers have so many more color varieties. It’s amazing. 😁

I put these in containers on my covered patio every summer, and they always thrive. I usually have to cut them back a couple of times.

Cool! I think cutting back is something I need to try this summer because they do start to flop over. Thanks for sharing, Teri.

These are my favorite bedding plants. I overwintered them in Arkansas but have had absolutely no luck doing so here in Indiana. They freeze to death no matter what I do, even when we lived in Bloomington. That doesn’t stop me from putting them out each and every spring!!

That’s interesting. I read that you can bring them indoors, but I’ve never tried it. Same here! 😉⚘
