I discovered Flower Friday while visiting Lorilin@Bugbugbooks. I decided to start sharing some flower pictures from our gardens along with some information about them. Please check out Lorilin’s blog if you haven’t already for book reviews and more!

This week’s share:
Monarda (Bee Balm)
I started growing monarda about eight years ago, solely for the butterflies. I started with pink, but it only lasted a few years. This batch in the photo was started from seed about four years ago. It just keeps producing and coming back with more every year.
My plan this year is to grow some different colors like red and dark pink. I’ll be sure to update how it goes.
- Scientific name: Monarda
- Higher classification: Nepetoideae
- Family: Lamiaceae
- Native to North America
- Hardiness: zones 4-9
This is one of my favorite flowers/herbs for the smell and the wildlife that it brings. The bees, butterflies and hummingbirds just flock to ours. Ours is all the deep crimson color but Molly has started seeds that should look like your yours. Last year we began making tea with ours, seeping it with the Lemon Mint. It is delicious!

How cool! I’ve never tried this one for tea yet, but read that Native Americans used it for tea often. Excited to try it! Thanks, Mackey. 😉

I’m not growing anything outdoors, but my orchids are blooming inside. 🥰

Hi, I’m a huge fan of Bee Balm. I have about 10 or 12 red Klein that attracts and satisfies the Hummers’ in my neighborhood. It’s like chocolate cake to them. All the best.

I’d love to find some of those too. They’re so beautiful. We planted some read, although I’m not sure what type, and they didn’t last long. Not sure what happened. Glad you like bee balm too! Thanks for sharing.

I did not realize there were other colours for this one. I have Red Monarda and it definitely brings the bees. I need to move it though as it is right by the tap for my hose and I do not want to get stung. I will have to check for other colours.

I hope you find some other colors too, Carla. I think red is my fave! You’ll have to let me know what you find. Thanks!

Beautiful! I wish my yard was big enough for bigger plants like this. 😀

Thanks! When we started them out, there were only a few, but they spread fairly quickly. They’re really easy to thin out or move to other locations though. 💕
