I’m joining in for the A to Z challenge this year which runs from April 1st to the 30th. My choice of theme is Music from Favorite Films. I’ll be sharing the songs in order of film title and will write a little bit about my thoughts on the movie as well.
It was hard to choose just one movie for “B” due to all the favorites: Braveheart, The Blues Brothers, Biodome, Blade, Billy Madison…and the list goes on. Ultimately, Boys on the Side wins out because of the emotional impact the movie had on me, and because one of the characters in the movie is a singer/musician. With The Blues Brothers being a big favorite and jam-packed with music, I’ll likely share it for “T” later on.
Boys on the Side
In the film Boys on the Side there are three main female characters that come together and form a very special friendship. It begins with Robin (Mary-Louise Parker), who’s struggling with an illness and needs a companion to travel with her cross-country. Jane (Whoopi Goldberg), who’s recently suffered a bad break-up, responds to Robin’s newspaper ad and they begin their journey west. Along the way they stop to meet up with Jane’s friend Holly (Drew Barrymore), and it becomes evident right away that she’s living in a horrible, abusive relationship. After an unexpected accident with Holly’s boyfriend, all three women flee together and settle down in Arizona with hope for a new start.
This movie is powerful and feels incredibly real once you get deep into the characters and discover their pasts. It’s funny, because at first Jane thinks Robin is just an annoying white person, which is quite comical because of how their relationship evolves. The movie reminds me of how wonderful friendship can be, and how even the unlikeliest of friends can become family. They forge strong bonds with each other and the love they have is intoxicating. It’s an emotional film, yet comical as well.
Whoopi Goldberg is the perfect ‘Jane’ and I honestly don’t think there could’ve been a better cast for any of these characters for that matter.
One of my favorite parts in the movie is when Robin purchases a piano for Jane. Later on, they sing to each other “You Got It” by Roy Orbison.
Lyrics:
Every time I look into your loving eyes
I see a love that money just can’t buy
One look, from you, I drift, away
I pray, that you, are here, today
Anything you want, you got it
Anything you need, you got it
Anything at all, you got it, baby
Every time I hold you, I begin to understand
Everything about you tells me I’m your man
I live (I live) my life (my life)
To be (to be) with you (with you)
No one (No one) can do (Can do)
The things (The things) you do (you do)
Anything you want, you got it
Anything you need, you got it
Anything at all, you got it, baby
Anything you want
(You got it)
Anything you need
(You got it)
Anything at all
(Do-do-do-do-doo, do-do-do-do-doo
Do-do-do-do-doo, you got it)
I’m glad, to give, my love, to you
I know, you feel, the way, I do
Anything you want, you got it
Anything you need, you got it
Anything at all, you got it, baby
Anything you want, you got it
Anything you need, you got it
Anything at all, you got it, baby
Anything at all
(You got it)
Baby
You got it

I love this song, but I do not remember that movie at all. I didn’t know Whoopi could sing like that.
