A to Z Challenge: Music from Favorite Films – “E” Encino Man “Feed The Monkey” & “Stone Cold Crazy” #AtoZChallenge

I’ve joined in for the A to Z challenge this year which runs from April 1st to the 30th. My choice of theme is Music from Favorite Films. I’ll be sharing the songs in order of film title and will write a little about my thoughts on the movie as well.

My choice for “E” is Encino Man, a film from 1992 with some of my favorite actors including Brendan Fraser, Sean Astin, and Pauly Shore.

The story follows Dave (Sean Astin) and Stoney (Pauly Shore), two high school best friends living in California who are in the process of digging a massive hole for a pool in Dave’s back yard. While digging they discover a strange looking object, and then a frozen caveman. After hauling the frozen block of ice into their garage, his body quickly defrosts reviving into a living human again. He explores their home while the boys are at school and becomes overstimulated by all the different objects and noises around him, having sort of a mental break down. When the boys get home and discover him attempting to start a fire, they calm him down, clean him up, and explain to Dave’s parents that he’s an exchange student named Link from Estonia. Yep, his parents actually believe it too!

Of course everyone at school falls in love with Link; well…all the girls do anyway, and Dave being sort of an outcast along with Stoney gain a little popularity now that everyone sees that they’re associated with Link. Dave still spends all of his time yearning for a girl named Robyn who has no interest in him, and Stoney just wants to find ridiculous things to do. Over time, Dave, Stoney, and Link grow closer, with Link becoming their best friend and protector. Dave learns a lesson or two about friendship and what’s important in life.

This is a teen comedy that  I fell in love with in high school, but it’s STILL a family favorite today. If you get online and look at ratings for Encino Man, you’ll see that they’re quite low, but I encourage you to just try the movie for yourself. It’s just plain fun.

The entire soundtrack for this movie is outstanding, but my two song choices for today are “Feed The Monkey” by Infectious Grooves and “Stone Cold Crazy” by Queen.

Mike Muir, the frontman of Infectious Grooves, is also the frontman for Suicidal Tendencies who I’ve seen in concert multiple times. They have a unique style. “Feed The Monkey” is one of those songs that just makes you want to move. Some might find the lyrics a little repulsive, but I love the song.

Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy” is one of their heavier songs and one of my personal favorites. It’s interesting, because Metallica remade “Stone Cold Crazy” and their bassist now is Robert Trujillo who used to be the bassist for Infectious Grooves and Suicidal Tendencies (above). It’s kind of cool how that all ties together, isn’t it? Totally coincidental too.

Infectious Grooves “Feed The Monkey” movie clip

Lyrics:

She likes to feed the monkey
She likes to feed the monkey
She likes to feed the monkey
She likes the monkey
Well gather ’round and let me tell you all a story
About a boy and his monkey
He’s got that kind of monkey that the girls wanna know
He likes to take his monkey every place that he goes
(Can we pet your monkey?)
Hey, ho, you see the monkey?
Did you know you made my monkey hungry?
I didn’t really know how it get so hungry
I’d like to know
Would you feed the monkey?
Well you can pet my monkey
‘Cause my monkey don’t bite
But when you pet my monkey
He get funky all night
My monkey ain’t no ordinary orangutang
‘Cause my monkey likes to do the wild thing
My monkey don’t scratch
My monkey don’t bite
My monkey don’t swing no tree
My monkey don’t hit
My monkey don’t drool
My monkey be swing with me
My monkey don’t freak
My monkey don’t trip
My monkey don’t wear no cape
But you can tell what my monkey wanna eat
‘Cause it turn into a big ol’ ape
Yeah…
Hey..
The monkey’s getting hungry
Hey, hey, why don’t you feed your monkey?
(REPEAT x 3)
What she want?
She wants the monkey
(REPEAT x 3)
You know she want
You know she want
You know she wants the monkey
(REPEAT x 3)
Hey, hey, she likes to feed the monkey
Ooh, she’s sayin’ it’s time to feed the monkey
Everyday she wants to feed the monkey
All through the day she likes to feed the monkey
She likes to feed the monkey
(REPEAT x 7)
Feed the monkey

Queen “Stone Cold Crazy”

Lyrics:

Sleeping very soundly
On a Saturday morning
I was dreaming I was Al Capone
There’s a rumour going round
Gotta clear outta town
I’m smelling like a dry-fish bone

Here come the Law,
Gonna break down the door
Gonna carry me away once more
Never, I never,
I never want it any more
Gotta get away from this stone-cold floor

Crazy
Stone-cold crazy, you know

Rainy afternoon
I gotta blow a typhoon
And I’m playing on my slide trombone
Anymore, anymore,
Cannot take it anymore
Gotta get away from this stone-cold floor

Crazy
Stone-cold crazy, you know

Hit ’em up

Walking down the street
Shooting people that I meet
With my rubber Tommy water gun
Here come the deputy
He’s gonna come and get a me
I gotta get me get up and run

They got the sirens loose
I ran right out of juice
They’re gonna put me in a cell
If I can’t go to heaven
Will they let me go to hell?

Crazy
Stone-cold crazy, you know
