A to Z challenge: Music From Favorite Films “H” Hell or High Water “Outlaw State of Mind” #AtoZChallenge #HellorHighWater

I’ve joined in for the A to Z challenge this year which runs from April 1st to the 30th. My choice of theme is Music from Favorite Films. I’ll be sharing the songs in order of film title and will write a little about my thoughts on the movie as well.

My choice for “H” was a little difficult–I had to narrow it down from about seven movies and songs, but finally chose Hell or High Water. This ended up being one of the best movies from 2016.

Quick summary: Toby Howard (Chris Pine) and his brother Tanner (Ben Foster), who has recently been released out of prison, need to raise enough money to pay off the reverse mortgage on their mother’s ranch. She has just recently passed away, and now that oil was discovered on the ranch, they need to secure the future of Toby’s sons and ex wife by raising $43,000 dollars to pay it off. After they make two robberies, Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) and his partner deputy (Gil Birmingham) try to stop them from committing their final crime.

I couldn’t wait to watch Hell or High Water after seeing the cast, in addition to the fact that it’s a neo-western crime thriller which really piqued my interest.

The main actors are Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham. Every single one of these actors gives an impeccable performance. From the moment this movie began I was on the edge of my seat. Chris Pine and Ben Foster play an ideal brotherly pair and the relationship between the two is genuine.

Toby and Tanner’s family have never been problem free; they’ve experienced financial difficulties since the very beginning. They’re plan now is to create a secure financial future for their family, and for the first time, the plaque of poverty will finally be in the past. As they begin to rob banks to collect money, it appears they might actually succeed, until Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) comes into the picture to stir things up.

Marcus just isn’t going to let this one go–he’s on to their plan and will find the people responsible for the bank robberies of Texas Midland Banks. He’ll do whatever it takes, and he’s up for the fight. I absolutely loved Jeff Bridge’s character with all the banter between him and his partner (Birmingham). It’s a fun and comical addition.

Overall, this movie is awesome. I was shocked at the ending and felt full of emotion during and after. Just thinking about it gives me the feels and probably because I crave that family bond (a bond I’ve always longed to have with my own brother). It’s moving the way Toby and Tanner will do anything for each other no matter what. It’s a brotherly bond that can’t be broken–one that shines so bright and brings tears to your eyes.

“Then why in the hell did you agree to do it, Tanner?”

Cause you asked, little brother”

This entire soundtrack is excellent, but my choice for today is “Outlaw State of Mind” by Chris Stapleton.

Cut my teeth on daddy’s old LGO
And I lost my mind somewhere in New Mexico
T.W. Put a snake on my back
I keep a red bone on my side

There’s people all across the land
From East Kentucky down to Alabama
Whole lot like I am all the time
In an outlaw state of mind

I got friends who know how to have a good time
They roll their own and drink Carolina shine
I’ve seen the devil in a dark coal mine
I’ve been higher than a Georgia pine

There’s people all across the land
From West Virginia to the Rio Grande
Whole lot like I am all the time
In an outlaw state of mind

Yeah there’s people all across the land
From New York out to ol’ San Fran
Just don’t give a damn all the time
In an outlaw state of mind

Thanks for checking out the A-Z challenge. Do you like this movie? Are you doing the challenge this year? Share your links in the comment section below if you’d like. Have a great week!

I don’t think Jeff Bridges can play a ‘bad’ part. He’s such a great actor.
And you can recognize Chris Stapleton the minute you hear his voice.
Great choice! But I think I’ll skip the movie. Sounds kinda like a Thelma & Louise thing. 👍🏻

This is a really under-appreciated film imo. Ben Foster is one of my favorite actors and Jeff Bridges is always amazing. I agree with you about the soundtrack; it’s all good.
