A to Z Challenge: Music from Favorite Films “I” Innerspace 1987 “Cupid” #AtoZChallenge #Innerspace #SamCooke #Movies

I’ve joined in for the A to Z challenge this year which runs from April 1st to the 30th. My choice of theme is Music from Favorite Films. I’ll be sharing the songs in order of film title and will write a little about my thoughts on the movie as well.

Innerspace is a favorite 80s movie and a great one for music.

In this Sci-Fi comedy, Lt. Tuck Pendleton (Dennis Quaid) volunteers to participate in a science project where he’ll be miniaturized. He’s put inside a pod and shrunken down to microscopic size before being sucked back into a syringe. The plan is to be injected into a rabbit, but things quickly go awry when the science project is hijacked. In an attempt to save him from being kidnapped while in the syringe, the head scientist injects Tuck into a human named Jack (Martin Short). Not long after, Tuck discovers that he’s actually inside a human man after he implants a camera into the optic nerve. Not only can Tuck see what Jack sees, but they can talk back and forth to each other as well. Together, these two have to find a way to get Tuck back out before Jack is taken out by the bad guys or Tuck runs out of resources.

The acting by Martin Short and Dennis Quaid is spot on: Martin is a spastic hypochondriac, while Tuck is a hotshot U.S. Naval pilot who likes to drink and party. It’s hard not to love Dennis Quaid’s character with the striking resemblance to Tom Cruise’s character in Top Gun. I’m pretty sure Quaid was originally introduced to me from Innerspace and he’s been a favorite ever since.

Martin Short is absolutely perfect for Jack’s ‘out-of-control’ and often annoying personality. I don’t think anyone could’ve done a better job. Lydia (Meg Ryan) plays a reporter who’s recently broken up with Tuck, but he still loves her. Once she gets involved there’s no telling how things will end up. She’s hilarious too! All three protagonists make a good team to get the job done and bring Tuck back to safety.

I can still remember the first time watching this as a child. The film is a little cheesy and incredibly wacky, but it’s so funny. For being an 80s movie it has some neat special effects too. It doesn’t matter how impossible the premise is, Innerspace is an entertaining comedy that’s sure to provide lots of laughs and a family-friendly movie that’s still a favorite today.

The soundtrack features multiple music artists: Rod Stewart, Berlin, Sam Cooke,  Narada Michael Walden and Wang Chung. My choice today had to be Sam Cooke. This movie actually inspired my love for Sam Cooke and “Cupid” is one of my favorite songs by him. Unfortunately, his life was cut short well before this movie.

Lyrics:

Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover’s heart for me, for me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover’s heart for me

Now, I don’t mean to bother you
But I’m in distress
There’s danger of me losing all of my happiness
For I love a girl who doesn’t know I exist
And this you can fix

So, Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover’s heart for me, nobody but me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover’s heart for me

Now, Cupid, if your arrow make her love strong for me
I promise I will love her until eternity
I know between the two of us her heart we can steal
Help me if you will

So, Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover’s heart for me, nobody but me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover’s heart for me

Now, Cupid
Don’t you hear me
Calling you?
I need you
Cupid
Help me
I need you
Cupid
Don’t fail me
