A to Z Challenge: “L” Labyrinth “Magic Dance” & “As The World Falls Down” #AtoZChallenge #Labyrinth #DavidBowie

I’ve joined in for the A to Z challenge this year which runs from April 1st to the 30th. My choice of theme is Music from Favorite Films. I’ll be sharing the songs in order of film title and will write a little about my thoughts on the movie as well.

Labyrinth quickly became a favorite movie as a child. For me it was easy; I fell in love with this magical story even with all its creepiness. Labyrinth seems to be one of those movies you either love or you hate. Most of my family love the movie, especially my youngest daughter who dances and sings to all the music. We’re super excited for the remake which is in the works!

The story begins with a young girl named Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) as she rehearses lines from a play at a local park with her dog Merlin. She’s late getting home to babysit her little brother, and upon returning gets in an argument with her stepmother. Being a teen, the last thing Sarah wants to do is babysit and frankly she’s tired of her baby brother Toby.

Sarah gets angry when her bear Lancelot is missing from her collection and she storms across the hall to see if Toby has it. Once she finds him in there, she whines and complains about how much she hates having a baby brother and that she wishes the Goblin King (David Bowie) would take him away. After shutting off the lights on Toby, his crying ceases, and Sarah realizes that he’s been taken from his crib.

When Jareth the Goblin King appears in Toby’s room, Sarah is beside herself with anguish. What has she done?

Sarah : You’re him, aren’t you? You’re the Goblin King! I want my brother back, please, if it’s all the same.

Jareth : What’s said is said.

Sarah : But, I didn’t mean it.

Jareth : Oh, you didn’t?

Sarah demands to know where Toby is. Jareth tells her that Toby is in his castle, and in order to get him back she’ll have to solve the labyrinth in thirteen hours or less; if she can’t, Toby will be turned into a goblin.

As Sarah attempts to locate the castle, she meets many strange creatures and large beasts that help her along the way. Some of them throw her off, and with Jareth’s magic and taunting, it becomes a crazy adventure.

This is a coming-of-age story, and by the end of the movie Sarah has grown up quite a bit. She realizes how much she loves Toby and that her childhood toys aren’t important.

David Bowie along with Trevor Jones produced all the songs on this soundtrack. These two are my favorites:

“Magic Dance”

As Sarah maneuvers her way through the labyrinth, Jareth awaits with his goblin crew and a distraught Toby…

Lyrics:

You remind me of the babe
What babe? babe with the power
What power? power of voodoo
Who do? you do
Do what? remind me of the babe

I saw my baby, crying hard as babe could cry
What could I do
My baby’s love had gone
And left my baby blue
Nobody knew

What kind of magic spell to use
Slime and snails
Or puppy dogs’ tails
Thunder or lightning
Then baby said
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Put that baby spell on me
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby, make him free

I saw my baby, trying hard as babe could try
What could I do
My baby’s fun had gone
And left my baby blue
Nobody knew

What kind of magic spell to use
Slime and snails
Or puppy dog’s tails
Thunder or lightning
Then baby said
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Put that baby spell on me
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby, make him free
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that baby spell on me (ooh)

You remind me of the babe
What babe? the babe with the power
What power? power of voodoo
Who do? you do
Do what? remind me of the babe

Dance magic, dance, ooh ooh ooh
Dance magic, dance magic, ooh ooh ooh
Dance magic

What kind of magic spell to use
Slime and snails
Or puppy dog tails
Thunder or lightning
Something frightening

Dance magic, dance
Dance magic, dance
Put that baby spell on me
Jump magic, jump
Jump magic, jump
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby make him free
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic
Slap that slap that baby make him free
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)

“As The World Falls Down”

This part in the movie seems weird, but it’s actually a dream that Sarah has after eating a poisoned peach from Jareth. She arrives at a strange masquerade…

Lyrics:

There’s such a sad love
Deep in your eyes.
A kind of pale jewel
Open and closed
Within your eyes.
I’ll place the sky
Within your eyes. There’s such a fooled heart
Beatin’ so fast
In search of new dreams.
A love that will last
Within your heart.
I’ll place the moon
Within your heart. As the pain sweeps through,
Makes no sense for you.
Every thrill is gone.
Wasn’t too much fun at all,
But I’ll be there for you-ou-ou
As the world falls down.

Falling.
Falling down.
Falling in love.

I’ll paint you mornings of gold.
I’ll spin you Valentine evenings.
Though we’re strangers ’til now,
We’re choosing the path
Between the stars.
I’ll leave my love
Between the stars.

As the pain sweeps through,
Makes no sense for you.
Every thrill is gone.
Wasn’t too much fun at all,
But I’ll be there for you-ou-ou
As the world falls down.

Falling
As the world falls down.
Falling
As the world falls down.
Falling.
Falling.
Falling.
Falling in love
As the world falls down.
Falling.
Falling.
Falling.
Falling.
Falling in love
As the world falls down.
Makes no sense at all.
Makes no sense to fall.
Falling
As the world falls down.
Falling.
Falling in love
As the world falls down.
Falling.
Falling
Falling in love
As the world falls down.

    1. Awesome! We have something in common. Yeah, some people think it’s really weird–my oldest son is one of them. I guess there’s some nostalgia there too for me being an 80s child. 😉 Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the movie!

    1. I totally get it! Watching it now, I do think parts are weird. I guess because I grew up watching the Muppets and Fraggle Rock it just took. There’s a lot of nostalgia for sure. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it now and hope you enjoy it if you watch it. 😉

  1. I can’t believe the number of times I watched this movie with my kids. My son loved this one so much. After we wore out the VHS tape, I bought him the DVD and I think he still has it. I loved the first song, the second is meh. David Bowie was amazing in this movie. Another great choice Jenn.
