A to Z Challenge “N” Nacho Libre “Religious Man” & “Encarnación” #AtoZChallenge #NachoLibre #JackBlack

I’ve joined in for the A to Z challenge this year which runs from April 1st to the 30th. My choice of theme is Music from Favorite Films. I’ll be sharing the songs in order of film title and will write a little about my thoughts on the movie as well.

“N” was more difficult because there were a handful of movies with great music to share besides Nacho Libre including Napoleon Dynamite and Night at the Roxbury to name a few. All are funny movies, but nothing tops Nacho Libre in my opinion. Any movie with Jack Black is at the top of the heap for me.

The film begins with Brother Ignacio (Jack Black), a monk who grew up in a Mexican orphanage and now (as an adult) cooks for the children living there. The monastery doesn’t have much money and Ignacio is forced to use the same old ingredients repeatedly,  which doesn’t please the children. As a child, Ignacio always dreamed of being a wrestler, but he’s motivated even more now to make money for the children. He secretly becomes the luchador Nacho and pairs up with a man named Steven Esquelito who hates orphans, but joins in for the money anyways.

Nacho: “I’m not listening to you! You only believe in Science. That’s probably why we never win!”

Esqueleto : We never win because you are fat!

Nacho Libre is a comedy, but based on the true story of Fray Tormenta who was a Mexican priest and became a wrestler to support his orphanage. The movie is full of zany humor and it’s laugh-out-loud hilarious, but it’s also inspiring as the characters take chances and face their fears. Nacho wants a taste of the glory and he’s not leaving without it.

I can’t understand the low ratings the movie has received. Don’t believe the naysayers! If you haven’t seen it, just give it a try.

The whole family loves this entire soundtrack. There are two or three songs by Beck and a mix of other artists. My favorites are the short songs sung by Jack Black; his voice is ravishing.

This first song by Mister Loco plays during the opening of the movie.

“Religious Man” by Mister Loco

Lyrics:

I am I am, I am I am,
I think I am, I think I am,
I’m glad I am
I’m proud I am,
a real religious man.

As I realized, The mightiest friend,
Can seperate, A chance from fate.
Cause you have al,l I need to take,
That’s why I think I am I am I am,
Whoa!

Cause I have prayed, I just behave
Cause saints and sinners,
Are quite the same.
Cause it’s my temple,
The whole wide world ,
That’s why I think I am I am

I am I am, I am I am,
I think I am, I think I am,
I’m glad I am
I’m proud I am,
a real religious man.

I am I am, I am I am,
I pray I am, I feel I am,
Oh Lord I am,
God knows I am,
A real religious man.

I am I am, I am I am,
I pray I am, I feel I am,
Oh Lord I am,
God knows I am,
A real religious man.
(A real religious man)

Jack Black singing “Encarnación”

Lyrics:

When i was in the wilderness, i wrote a song for Encarnacion… in my mind.
Shall i sing it for you?
Sure
When the fantasy has ended
and all the children are gone
Something good inside me
helps me to carry on
I ate some bugs
I ate some grass
I use my hand
to wipe my tears
To kiss your mouth
i break my vow
no no no no no no wait hozain
unless you want you
then
we break our vows together
Encarnacion
Encarnacio-o-o-o-on
Encarnacion
Encarnacio-o-o-o-on

  1. I totally didn’t think Nacho Libre was my kind of thing, but it surprised me by actually being really good. It helped that I was watching with my friend’s Central American husband who was laughing his head off.

    1. Lol! 😂 That’s too funny that you say that because when I first watched it, I didn’t love it either and found a lot of it annoying. The kids watch it all the time and I guess it grew on me. 😂 Thanks for sharing, Nicole, and have a great weekend.

      1. Ha ha! I remember when I watched it for the first time when it came out… About 20 mins in I though “it has to be almost over!”… It wasn’t! I guess I must have been too old for it! (which is weird because I LOVE deadpan humour! But, I’d rather get it from Wes Anderson movies than Napoleon Dynamite. 😊

        1. Whaaa?? WONDERFUL movies of his!! But, you need to see “the royal tenenbaums”, “the grand Budapest hotel”, “Darjeeling express”, “life aquatic”, “running with scissors”, “Rushmore”, etc. All very weird humour….. Another director to go for (my personal favourite) is Christopher guest. “a mighty wind”, “this is spinal tap”, “best in show”, “waiting for guffman”. All. Amazing!!

        2. Oh my gosh, the Christoper Guest from The Princess Bride? I’ve seen him in a handful of movies, but I’m not sure what I’ve seen directed by him. How cool. What a list! Thanks 👍😉

I think I’ve watched this movie at least 6 times with the grandkids. Lol. What a crazy movie! I agree, no one could play this part other than Jack Black. Great clips! 🤣

  3. I love Jack Black and I used to watch wrestling with my husband, so I do not understand why I have never seen this movie. I am definitely going to see if I can find it, maybe Netflix?
