Today’s share:
Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)
Since I wasn’t sharing posts during my break in 2020, I thought this coneflower from last July would be a nice share for today’s Flower Friday. These have become a favorite over the years.
Coneflower is a very popular perennial and for many reasons. These are super easy to grow, attract many pollinators, and make beautiful cut flowers. You can get them in many different shades of pink, orange, red, yellow, and chartreuse. There are also various types, with Echinacea purpurea remaining the most popular.
We have these planted in the same butterfly garden with the butterfly weed, hibiscus, and wisteria. Because adult butterflies are attracted to red, orange, yellow, pink and purple blossoms, this garden is a butterfly heaven.
These were started from seed many years ago, and they return year after year with more and more blooms. They’re about 3 feet tall. In the future, I’d love to grow some in different shades.
Fun fact: Purple coneflower can be used medicinally as a painkiller and for other ailments, including toothache, coughs, colds, sore throats, and snake bites.

Thanks for checking out Flower Friday! What do you have blooming this week? Have a wonderful weekend!
🧡 Mischenko
Hi Mischenko! These coneflowers are very nice. I like the ones that come back every year. I have bulbs that do that. Last year I planted four o’clocks and they looked great. They have really big seeds like morning glories and produced a lot of those. Hoping they come back this year 🙂 Happy Friday!

Hi! How lovely! I’m curious about those and wonder if there are different types. We have heartleaf 4 o’ clocks growing wild, but I don’t think those are the same? I hope they comes back for you too! ❤️

They are all different colors and grow to look like bushes. I wonder if they are the same family as your wild heartleaf ones? I’d send a picture if I knew how 🙂

How interesting. If you have time, can you click on the post above titled ‘purple blooms’ and tell me if they look similar to the purple that we have? Gosh, there’s so much to learn about the plant kingdom! 😉

Oh yes I’ll do that right now!

Hi – actually no, they look different. The green stems look similar but the flowers resemble morning glories and they are bigger. They also don’t bloom for the whole day. I’m trying to figure out what time, because at 4:00 they were shut. More like the morning, I think.

Hmm, this is so cool. I’m going to have to do some more research now. Thanks so much for checking it out! I’m going to see if I can find some seed. So neat! 💜

They were the only seeds I could get at the grocery store last year and so I gave them a try. I was very happy!

These are beautiful, and what a variety of colors they come in! Despite having no success with bulbs in the past, I planted irises last fall – nothing. Some iris bulbs I got from a friend when she was thinning hers out – looking strong and healthy. Keeping my fingers crossed.

How strange that you didn’t get any blooms. Maybe this year they’ll come up? I know you’ve mentioned before that your soil is problematic, but I feel like thrive quite well without special care. I’m no expert though. We’ve had bulbs get eaten by voles and moles which is such a shame. I just can’t think of why yours wouldn’t come up. Definitely keep me updated if you can. I’m curious!

We used to grow purple coneflowers by the fence around our pool. We dug them up because of all the bees they attracted. I should replant some in a different spot, they are beautiful and we need the pollinators for sure.

Ah, the bees. I love bees, but they’re definitely no fun by the pool! I’ll see if I can collect some seed for you. You wouldn’t believe how easy they are to grow straight from seed! Thanks, Carla. ❤️ Have a good week.

When we grew them before I bought a small container of 6 little plants and they grew so quickly and spread quite a bit. Our greenhouses and farms are getting ready to start selling, so I am going to see if they have any. I have a couple of spots where they would be perfect behind the house.
