Queen

“I Want to Break Free”

This is one of my favorite songs by Queen. I was reading an article over the weekend about how this video was banned in the U.S. and possibly other countries because of the ‘drag’ and ‘homosexuality’, which wasn’t acceptable at the time. It’s thought-provoking, especially when you compare it to videos today that actually contain harmful content and will never be banned. They don’t even compare. Hope you all enjoy this one.

Lyrics:

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You’re so self satisfied I don’t need you
I’ve got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I’ve fallen in love
I’ve fallen in love for the first time

And this time I know it’s for real
I’ve fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I’ve fallen in love

It’s strange but it’s true
I can’t get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free, baby
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can’t get used to, living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don’t want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own
So baby can’t you see
I’ve got to break free

I’ve got to break free
I want to break free, yeah

I want, I want, I want, I want to break
Free

Though I don’t remember it, it’s a good song. The lyrics alone argue for an alternative. The video probably wasn’t too subtle at the release, but it’s pretty tame today. I guess we’re that jaded.

    1. The video is supposed to be a spoof off a popular British Soap called Coronation Street. I’ve never seen it. Certain people just made the video out to be what they wanted to because it was rumored/known that Freddy Mercury was bisexual at the time. I think the video is hilarious. It’s too bad people just can’t be left alone to be the artists they want to be. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, David.
