This week’s share:
The Doobie Brothers “Listen to the Music”
Yesterday my son had to get on an airplane and fly across the country for the first time since this wretched pandemic began. It was a huge adjustment for him and caused him some anxiety.
Getting to sleep the other night, I was thinking about songs to gather into a playlist for him so he could have something different to listen to—songs that maybe he wouldn’t be 100% familiar with. I’m always blasting off song titles to people because music has been such a huge part of my life since I was very young. I apply it every single day in one way or another. Anyhow, I fell asleep the night before his departure, and in a dream this song came to me. It’s the weirdest thing because The Doobie Brothers haven’t been one of my favorite bands, even though they’re familiar and I do enjoy their music. Who knows why the song entered my mind, but that morning I awoke with a smile on my face. After listening to the lyrics, I realized how perfect this song is. It’s all about music and how it makes us feel better. It’s definitely a song that makes you feel—one that’s impossible to sit still to and positive and uplifting. What’s interesting is that The Doobie Brothers became popular in the 1970s, the decade in which I was born, and they’re a band from California where my son is now.
This song even applies to the pandemic as far as the news that we’ve all been hung up with. We’ve all needed the happy sounds of music, haven’t we?
“What the people need
Is a way to make ’em smile
It ain’t so hard to do if you know how
Gotta get a message
Get it on through”
Lyrics:
Don’t you feel it growin’, day by day
People gettin’ ready for the news
Some are happy, some are sad
Oh, we got to let the music play
What the people need
Is a way to make ’em smile
It ain’t so hard to do if you know how
Gotta get a message
Get it on through
Oh, now mama’s go’n’ to after ‘while
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
All the time
Well I know, you know better
Everything I say
Meet me in the country for a day
We’ll be happy
And we’ll dance
Oh, we’re gonna dance our blues away
And if I’m feelin’ good to you
And you’re feelin’ good to me
There ain’t nothin’ we can’t do or say
Feelin’ good, feeling fine
Oh, baby, let the music play
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
All the time
Like a lazy flowing river
Surrounding castles in the sky
And the crowd is growing bigger
List’nin’ for the happy sounds
And I got to let them fly
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
All the time

The Doobie Brothers definitely made some good music. They were never at the top of my favorite bands list, but always somewhere mixed in. A great song choice!

Most excellent selection Jen. This was always one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite groups. I am aging myself, but I grew up singing and dancing to this song in the local bars. When my husband and I went to Florida for the last time, The Doobie Brothers played at Sea World and we went to hear them. Of course they played this song. I will be singing this one for the rest of the night. 💖🎶

This is another Cali band like the Eagles that I was completely unaware of in their early years because I was listening to Led Zeppelin and Alice Cooper. But after high school I caught on. Their name conflicted me. At the time one didn’t see band names all over the place. You just listened to the radio and the DJ told you who was playing. When I heard they were the “doobie” brothers I thought I might give a listen. Glad I did.

I remember those days, David. It wasn’t so easy to find out a song title or band either. Now you can just use an app like Shazam to discover that information so effortlessly. I remember standing in the record store talking to the owners of the place, trying to figure out a particular song in my teens. Those were the days. Good to know you’re also a Zeppelin fan. 👍

This is such a wonderful song and brings back so many memories. I was such a little girl when the song came out and I remember my dad and my mom and my aunt all listening to it in their cars and we would all sing at the top of our lungs. Thank you for bringing back such a happy memory.
