This week’s song pick is:

Faith No More

“A Small Victory”

I was around 15 years old when this album came out. I had enough money to purchase three CD’s from my favorite place in the world at that time–Hegewisch Records. I ended up purchasing Faith No More’s Angel Dust, Nirvana’s Nevermind and Pearl Jam’s Ten. The lead singer of Faith No more, Mike Patton, has always been a favorite and his voice captivates me. The band has been together since 1979, became Faith No More in 1982, and they still perform today.

Lyrics:

A hierarchy
Spread out on the nightstand
The spirit of team
Salvation is another chance
A sore loser
Yelling with my mouth shut
A cracking portrait
The fondling of trophies
The null of losing
Can you afford that luxury?
A sore winner
But I’ll just keep my mouth shut

It shouldn’t bother me, no
It shouldn’t, no, no
It shouldn’t bother me, no
It shouldn’t
But it does!

The small victories
The cankers and medallions
The little nothings
That keeps me thinking that someday
I might beat you
But I’ll just keep my mouth shut

It shouldn’t bother me, no
It shouldn’t, no, no
It shouldn’t bother me, no
It shouldn’t
But it, but it does!

It. Shouldn’t. Bother me!
It. Shouldn’t. Bother me!

It. Shouldn’t. Bother me!
(It shouldn’t bother me, no
It shouldn’t, no, no)
It. Shouldn’t. Bother me!
(It shouldn’t bother me, no
It shouldn’t)

If I speak at one constant volume at one constant pitch
At one constant rhythm right into your ear, you still won’t hear
You still won’t hear
You still won’t hear
You still won’t hear
You still won’t hear
You still won’t hear
You still won’t hear

This week’s song pick is:

Alice In Chains

“Nutshell”

I’ve had a rough week with a few unexpected events that I’m struggling to get past and just about the only thing I feel like I can do to help myself is listen to music. I know I’ve mentioned this song on previous posts before, but Alice In Chains is a fave and this is just one of my go-to songs. I chose this song because it’s been a favorite since the moment I heard it for the first time, it’s written by Layne Staley, whom I miss dearly, and it helps me release my emotions. It’s one of my best loved songs of all time.

Lyrics:

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home

Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh

My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can’t be my own
I’d feel better dead

Ooh
Ooh
Ooh

Music Monday: Tangerine Dream “Loved by the Sun” from the film “Legend”

musicmonday

This week’s song pick:

Tangerine Dream

“Loved by the Sun”

This is from the movie “Legend” with Tom Cruise, Mia Sarah, and Tim Curry from 1985. I chose this song because “Legend” was a favorite movie growing up and the song really is beautiful to me. The vocals are by Jon Anderson. The video quality isn’t perfect on this one, but we purchased the Blue-ray movie from Amazon and it’s quite amazing and roughly $10 which I thought was fairly cheap.

-Lyrics-

I’ve seen the mystics play there
Once or twice but I knew they had a reason
Enchantment plays it’s cards all right
Hand in hand with the workings of the seasons

Legends can be now and forever
Teaching us to love for goodness sake
Legends can be now and forever
Loved by the sun, loved by the sun
Loved

Two and two go so close together
Whether there is hope that is torn apart
In the words of all that’s singing
Hand in hand the beginning is at the start

Legends can be now and forever
Teaching us to reach for goodness sake
Legends can be now and forever
Loved by the sun
Loved by the sun
Loved

Who sings of all of love’s eternity
Whose shines so bright
In all the songs of love’s unending spells

Only lightning strikes all that’s evil
Teaching us to love for goodness sake
Hear the music of love eternal
Teaching us to reach for goodness sake
Legends can be now and forever
Teaching us to love for goodness sake

Sweet songs of youth, the wise, the meeting of all wisdom
Sweet songs of youth, the wise, the meeting of all wisdom
Sweet songs of youth, the wise, the meeting of all wisdom
Sweet songs of youth, the wise, the meeting of all wisdom
To believe in the good in man.
To believe in the good in man.
To believe in the good in man.

Music Monday: Eminem “Guts Over Fear” Featuring Sia

This week’s song pick:

Eminem

“Guts Over Fear”

I picked this song because I love its meaning. It’s about Eminem’s struggles as an artist and speaks a loud message about courage. I especially love what’s happening in the video. The story is about an aspiring boxer who’s dealing with many issues including money, a pregnant wife, a job he hates, and his dad who obviously has a drinking disorder. The message to me is never give up, persevere and overcome life’s obstacles while ignoring the negative.

The song features Sia singing, but in the video, it’s Chantelle Brown-Young aka Winnie Harlow, a Canadian fashion model. “Guts Over Fear” was also used in the movie “The Equalizer” with Denzel Washington. It’s one of my favorite movies. I’ve included both videos here for you.

This following video includes clips from “The Equalizer” which can spoil the movie if you haven’t seen it yet.

Lyrics

Feels like a close, it’s coming to
Fuck am I gonna do?
It’s too late to start over
This is the only thing I, thing I know

Sometimes I feel like all I ever do is
Find different ways to word the same, old song
Ever since I came along
From the day the song called ‘’Hi! My Name Is’’ dropped
Started thinking my name was fault
‘Cause anytime things went wrong
I was the one who they would blame it on
The media made me the equivalent of a modern-day Genghis Khan
Tried to argue it was only entertainment, dawg
Gangsta? Naw, courageous balls
Had to change my style, they said I’m way too soft
And I sound like AZ and Nas, out came the claws
And the fangs been out since then
But up until the instant that I’ve been against it
It was ingrained in me that I wouldn’t amount to a shitstain I thought
No wonder I had to unlearn everything my brain was taught
Do I really belong in this game? I pondered
I just wanna play my part, should I make waves or not?
So back and forth in my brain the tug of war wages on
And I don’t wanna seem ungrateful or disrespect the artform I was raised upon
But sometimes you gotta take a loss
And have people rub it in your face before you get made pissed off
And keep pluggin’, it’s your only outlet
And your only outfit so you know they gonna talk about it
Better find a way to counter it quick and make it, ah
Feel like I’ve already said this a kabillion eighty times
How many times can I say the same thing different ways that rhyme?
What I really wanna say is, is there anyone else that can relate to my story?
Bet you feel the same way I felt when I was in the same place you are

I was afraid to
Make a single sound
Afraid I will never find a way out, out, out
Afraid I never before
I didn’t wanna go another round
An angry man’s power will shut you up
Trip wires fill this house with tip-toe love
Run out of excuses with every word
So here I am and I will not run
Guts over fear, (The time is here)
Guts over fear, (I shall not tear)
For all the times I let you push me around
And let you keep me down
(Now I got) Guts over fear, guts over fear

Feels like a close, it’s coming to
Fuck am I gonna do?
It’s too late to start over
This is the only thing I, thing I know

I know what it was like, I was there once, single parents
Hate your appearance, did you struggle to find your place in this world?
And the pain spawns all the anger on
But it wasn’t until I put the pain in songs learned who to aim it on
That I made a spark, started to spit hard as shit
Learned how to harness it while the reins were off
And there was a lot of bizarre shit, but the crazy part
Was soon as I stopped saying “I gave a fuck”
Haters started to appreciate my art
And it just breaks my heart to look at all the pain I’ve caused
But what am I gonna do when the rage is gone?
And the lights go out in the trailer park?
And the window that was closing and there’s nowhere else I can go with flows in
And I’m frozen cause there’s no more emotion for me to pull from
Just a bunch of playful songs that I made for fun
So to the break of dawn here I go recycling the same, old song
But I’d rather make “Not Afraid 2” than making another mothafuckin’ “We Made You” uh
Now I don’t wanna seem indulgent when I discuss my lows and my highs
My demise and my uprise, pray to God
I just opened enough eyes later on
Gave you the supplies and the tools to hopefully use it to make you strong
And enough to lift yourself up when you feel like I felt
‘Cause I can’t explain to y’all how dang exhausted my legs felt
Just having to balance my damn self
But on eggshells I was made to walk
But thank you, ma, ‘cause that gave me the
Strength to cause Shady-mania, so many empty that stadium
At least I made it out of that house and a found a place in this world when the day was done
So this is for every kid who all’s they ever did was dreamt that one day just getting accepted
I represent him or her, anyone similar, you are the reason that I made this song
Everything you’re scared to say don’t be afraid to say no more
From this day on forward, just let them a-holes talk
Take it with a grain of salt and eat their fucking faces off
The legend of the angry blonde lives on through you when I’m gone
And to think I was gone

I was afraid to
Make a single sound
Afraid I will never find a way out, out, out
Afraid I never before
I didn’t wanna go another round
An angry man’s power will shut you up
Trip wires fill this house with tip-toe love
Run out of excuses with every word
So here I am and I will not run
Guts over fear, (The time is here)
Guts over fear, (I shall not tear)
For all the times I let you push me around
And let you keep me down

Music Monday! Pantera “Cemetery Gates” 1990

Music Monday

This meme was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. You pick a song that you really like and share it on Monday! I’m having so much fun with this meme and I’m so glad that Claire@BrizzleLassBooks brought it to my attention.

musicmonday

I thought I’d go way back to the 90s for this Music Monday. I saw Pantera in concert multiple times in the 90s and this is truly one of my favorite songs by them. I honestly had a hard time choosing one favorite Pantera song, but I chose this one because the song really highlights Phil Anselmo’s voice. A lot of people don’t like metal music, and that’s perfectly fine, but just please give this one a try. His vocal ability is quite amazing and I personally find his range electrifying.

pantera11.jpg

I get serious butterflies in my stomach when I hear this song. When Phil was asked about the song meaning, he spoke about the lyrics lamenting the death of a female lover and the narrator reflects on rejoining her in the afterlife. Regarding the lyrical inspiration, Phil Anselmo told Music Photocalypse: “There was a friend who had died in New Orleans and it had a real heavy impact within my group of friends.” – Songfacts.com

This week’s Song Pick

Pantera

“Cemetery Gates”

I have to give you two different versions of the song and here’s why. This first version with the official video cuts off a whole section from the front of the song; a very important part of the song. The second version is the original tempo, but it cuts off the back of the song, which is also very important.

At 4:54 is an unbelievable screaming high note from Phil paired with a follow-up from Darrell’s guitar, it’s insane!

Here’s the second version from VH1, which includes the beginning lyrics below. This is the “Demon Knight” movie version which features the Crypt-Keeper laughing at the beginning and also an alternate ending- just a warning! It’s a little disturbing. Does anyone remember the Crypt-Keeper? I prefer this ‘version’ of the song because of the tempo, but the Crypt- Keeper interrupts the ending and totally freaks me out…

-Lyrics-

Reverend, reverend,
Is this a conspiracy?
Crucified for no sins
No revenge beneath me
Lost within my plans for life,
It all seems so unreal
I’m a man cut in half in this world,
Left in my misery

Reverend he turned to me
Without a tear in his eyes
Nothing new for him to see,
I didn’t ask him why
I will remember
The love our souls had sworn to make
Now I watch the falling rain
All my mind can see now is your

Well I guess you took my youth
And gave it all away
Like the birth of a new found joy
This love would end in rage
And when she died I couldn’t cry
The pride within my soul
You left me incomplete
All alone as the memories now unfold

Believe the word
I will unlock my door
And pass the cemetery gates

Sometimes when I’m alone,
I wonder aloud,
If you’re watching over me
Some place far abound
I must reverse my life
I can’t live in the past
Then set my soul free,
Belong to me at last

Through all those complex years
I thought I was alone
I didn’t care to look around
And make this world my own
And when she died
I should’ve cried and spared myself some pain
You left me incomplete,
All alone as the memories still remain

The way we were,
The chance to save my soul
And my concern is now in vain
Believe the word,
I will unlock my door
And pass the cemetery gates

The way we were,
The chance to save my soul
And my concern is now in vain.
Believe the word,
I will unlock my door
And pass the cemetery

Gates
Gates

Music Monday – September 11th Memorial – James Taylor “You Can Close Your Eyes”

Music Monday

This meme was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. You pick a song that you really like and share it on Monday!

musicmonday

Today is a special Music Monday. Last week I shared a song by Simon and Garfunkel titled “The Sound of Silence” from the 10-year September 11th Memorial service. If you’d like to see that post you can click HERE. Today on September 11th, 16 years later, I thought I’d share another song from the 10-year memorial service which was performed by James Taylor and it’s titled “You Can Close Your Eyes.”

James Taylor

You Can Close Your Eyes

Lyrics:

“You Can Close Your Eyes”

Well the sun is surely sinking down, but the moon is slowly rising.
So this old world must still be spinning round and I still love you.

So close your eyes, you can close your eyes, it’s all right.
I don’t know no love songs and I can’t sing the blues anymore.
But I can sing this song and you can sing this song when I’m gone.

It won’t be long before another day, we gonna have a good time.
And no one’s gonna take that time away. You can stay as long as you like.

So close your eyes, you can close your eyes, it’s all right.
I don’t know no love songs and I can’t sing the blues anymore.
But I can sing this song and you can sing this song when I’m gone.

Music Monday: X Ambassadors “Renegades”

Music Monday

This meme was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. You pick a song that you really like and share it on Monday!

musicmonday

This week’s song pick is…

X Ambassadors

“Renegades”

I love this song, but the video takes the song to an even higher level and makes the song even more powerful. You’ll notice that there are some fascinating things happening. Multiple disabled people are going above and beyond and breaking the rules. They’re renegades and nothing can stop them.

The lead singer’s brother Casey is the keyboardist for the band and he’s blind. The video is personal to them for this reason. You can watch it below. The music starts at about 1:00.

Lyrics

Run away with me
Lost souls and reverie
Running wild and running free
Two kids, you and me

And I say
Hey, hey hey hey
Living like we’re renegades
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Living like we’re renegades
Renegades, renegades

Long live the pioneers
Rebels and mutineers
Go forth and have no fear
Come close the end is near

And I say hey, hey hey hey
Living like we’re renegades
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Living like we’re renegades
Renegades, renegades

All hail the underdogs
All hail the new kids
All hail the outlaws
Spielberg’s and Kubrick’s

It’s our time to make a move
It’s our time to make amends
It’s our time to break the rules
Let’s begin

And I say hey, hey hey hey
Living like we’re renegades
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Leaving like we’re renegades
Renegades, renegades

This week’s song pick is…

Double Dutch Bus

By Frankie Smith

When this song comes on,  I have to move. I love it.

When I was younger and had a nightlife, I would go out with my friends on the weekends. This song would come on and we would get together in a group and do the “Double Dutch Bus.” I’m not spectacular at dancing, but this one is fairly easy, and in my opinion, looks so impressive with a bunch of people.

Here’s a lovely group of people doing the “Double Dutch Bus” Dance below…

The lady in grey on the left really has it down!

Good times…

This song comes from the album “Children of Tomorrow”

1981

R-959951-1268935188.jpeg

Lyrics:

Gimme a “ho” if you got your funky bus fare

Ho! ho! ho!

There’s a double dutch bus coming down the street
Moving pretty fast
So kinda shuffle your feet
Get on the bus and pay your fare
And tell the driver that you’re
Going to a Double Dutch Affair
Fe fi fo fum
Well I’ll be darn here it comes
The Double Dutch Bus is on the street
You’d better get off the curb
Move your feet

Bus fare trans-pass
That’s the way my money lasts
Ain’t got no car to get around
When I go to work I’ve gotta go downtown
Now I’ve missed my train
That’s a darn shame
When I’m running late no sleep’s to blame
If you’ve gotta wife you know I’m right
Gotta special man well I can understand
Uptown, downtown everybody’s getting down
Say uptown, say downtown

Well I missed my bus I know I’m late
I gotta do something I know I hate
I’m gonna walk to work fifteen blocks
I already got a hole in my socks
Go ahead and laugh that’s okay
‘Cause what I really wanna say
I got bad feet my corns hurt
To top it off I’m late for work
Let me tell you what I say
When I’m dealin’ wit a funky sidewalk
Let me show you how I walk
When I gotta do my funky walk
Let me tell you what I say
When I’m dealing wit a funky sidewalk

I say shhhhhhhhhhh-sugarrrrr

This week’s song pick is…

Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart

by Chris Cornell

I chose this song for today because it’s been on my mind a lot lately and comes from one of my most favorite albums of all time “Higher Truth” which was released in 2015.

chriscornellhigheralbumbigger.jpg

The song is great and lyrics too, but the controversy now is the music video. It’s since been removed from YouTube after Chris Cornell’s death due to the content.

In the video which takes place in the old west, Chris Cornell and Eric Roberts play prison mates soon to be executed. Right before Chris Cornell is to be hanged, a lady in watching distracts the hangman and the assistant sabotages the noose so that it’ll break when they hang him. She saves his life and he is forced into marriage with her. Afterwards, another prisoner is to be hanged, and the story starts all over again. Chris isn’t the only one to escape death, but what is the meaning of it?

An interesting fact is that the blonde boy in the video is Chris Cornell’s 10-year-old son.

Lyrics

Every time I stare into the sun
Trying to find a reason to go on
All I ever get is burned and blind
Until the sky bleeds the pouring rain

When you came along the time was right
Pulled me like an apple red and ripe
Wasn’t very long you took a bite
And did me wrong, and it serves me right

And I nearly forgot my broken heart
It’s taking me miles away,
From the memory of how we broke apart
Here we go round again, again

Every little key unlocks the door
Every little secret has a lie
Tryna take a picture of the sun
And it won’t help you to see the light

Every little word upon your lips
Makes a little cut where blood pours out
Every little drop of blood a kiss that I won’t miss
Not for anything

And I nearly forgot my broken heart
It’s taking me miles away,
From the memory of how we broke apart
Here we go round again
Every single feeling tells me this is leading to a heart
In broken little pieces and you know I need this
Like a hole in the head

Every single feeling tells me this is leading to a heart
In broken little pieces and you know I need this
Like a hole in the head

And I nearly forgot my broken heart
It’s taking me miles away,
From the memory of how we broke apart
Here we go round again

And I nearly forgot my broken heart
It’s taking me miles away,
From the memory of how we broke apart
Here we go round again

Here we go round again
Here we go round again
Here we go round again

Music Monday: Band of Horses “The Funeral”

I just saw this meme over at Claire’s blog BrizzleLassBooks.com and was instantly hooked. This meme was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. You pick a song and share it on Monday. Please check out both of these blogs if you haven’t already.

musicmonday

I’ve had this song on my mind for some time. I started listening to the lyrics on Pandora and instantly it reminded me of my dad. Those of you that follow my “Lessons from Grandpa” posts might have heard about my dad’s story. Well, in a nutshell, I don’t know where he is any more or whether or not he’s alive. He’s been an alcoholic his whole life and never really had much use for me, my brother, or his grandkids. My brother and I just live our lives and it’s like we are in some sort of waiting and wondering if we will ever hear from him again. We’ve also had conversations with each other on whether or not someone will notify us if and when he dies. It’s an eerie thought that crosses my mind often, but I know that he will never stop drinking and has tried to take his life more than once.

This song reminds me of him because of the lyrics and the music video. In the video, you see people drinking, specifically a man. He then gets into a car and drives. I guess you just have to watch it and read the lyrics to get an idea where I’m coming from.

After doing research, I learned that the song meaning is written from a totally different idea, but it resonated with me.

Band of Horses “The Funeral”

Lyrics

I’m coming up only to hold you under
And coming up only to show you’re wrong
And to know you is hard; we wonder…
To know you all wrong; we warn.

 Ooooooooh Oooooooooh
Ooooooooh Oooooooooh

Really too late to call,
So we wait for morning
To wake you is all we got
To know me as hardly golden
Is to know me all wrong, they warn.

At every occasion I’ll be ready for the funeral
At every occasion, once more, it’s called the funeral
At every occasion, oh, I’m ready for the funeral
Every occasion, oh, one billion day funeral

I’m coming up only to show you’re down for
And coming up only to show you’re wrong.

To the outside, the dead leaves lay on the lawn
For they don’t have trees to hang upon.

 Ooooooooh Oooooooooh
Ooooooooh Oooooooooh

At every occasion I’ll be ready for the funeral
At every occasion, once more, it’s called the funeral
At every occasion, oh, I’m ready for the funeral
Every occasion, oh, one billion day funeral
