Occasionally I get hit with anxiety and depression and it really kicks me down. The scariest thing is not knowing how long it’s going to last or how I’ll get through it again. The goal is to fight it and get back to living as quickly as I can. I feel that music is an integral part of mental healing (for me). Here are four songs (and albums) that helped me tremendously in this last few weeks in no particular order.

This week I chose a few songs from the movie “Blue Crush” with Kate Bosworth and the ever so awesome Michelle Rodriguez. In the movie, Anne Marie (Bosworth) is living with a few roommates and her younger sister who she’s responsible for. Anne Marie has plans to surf in the Rip Masters surf competition, but she has some underlying fears she’s dealing with. Then she meets Mat, a professional quarterback and begins to lose track. Between work, making rent, keeping her sister in school, training, and a new romance, she struggles to stay the course.

I love the cast and there are real-life professional women surfers in it. The movie’s always been a favorite and these songs remind me of the beach and summer which we’re in the middle of right now.

I just finished reading Broken Music by Sting and I’ll share my review later for that. I’ve been a Police fan since I was a young child and Sting is still a favorite artist today. Here are two favorites that go way back to my childhood, back to when sitting in front of MTV was all I wanted to do. Not only are these favorite songs, but favorite music videos as well.

Today’s share is a song by Metallica. This is one of my favorite Metallica instrumentals and gives me a chance to talk about two of my favorite bassists of all time. It’s one that Jason Newsted (former bassist) performed in, and the last Metallica song that Cliff Burton (bassist of Metallica before Newsted) was credited for. Cliff died on my 9th birthday. That day, he was in a tragic bus accident and perished at the young age of 24.

Today, rather than finish out the month of May sharing Chris Cornell, I’m going to share an old favorite for Memorial Day. Here in the U.S. on the last Monday in May, we remember those who died fighting for our country and for our freedom. For some, Memorial Day is just a day off work, a long weekend, an outdoor BBQ, or the unofficial start of summer, but Memorial Day means so much more than that and we must remember. So, today I’d like to share this song for Music Monday to honor and remember those who gave all.

From May 7th: When I first started this blog, one of my intentions was to talk about music as much as possible, hence my blog name. 🙂 My very first music blog post from March 2017 featured Mad Season, a band that eventually included Chris Cornell and the next, Temple of the Dog. It felt great to talk about some of the music I’ve always loved. Little did I know, just a few months later he’d be gone like so many others before him.

I’m not one of those people who usually count dates or add up the time since someone has been gone, yet here I am doing it with Chris. It’s been a year this month and I can’t believe the time has flown. For the whole month of May–to honor Chris–I’ll be sharing some of my favorite Chris Cornell songs.

On Friday, which marked one year since Chris’s passing, I shared “Live To Rise” by Soundgarden. If you’d like to see that post you can click here.

I came across this song on Pandora the other day by The Temper Trap that literally fascinated me. Falling in love with music is such a wonderful experience. I kept hearing all these different groups in the song like Coldplay and Twenty One Pilots, but I couldn’t put my finger on who the singer, Dougy Mandagi, reminded me of…

I was thinking Philip Bailey from Earth, Wind, and Fire, or Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees, and even Aaron Neville at one point, but those weren’t right. I finally pinpointed it and got stuck on YouTube for hours listening to The Stylistics with Russell Thompkins Jr. You can watch this video below from Soul Train– a show I used to watch as a kid. See what you think. I started the song right when he begins to sing, although this entire ten minute video is worth watching, especially when they interview the group with the audience.

Two very awesome groups. Here are the lyrics for the songs below:

What If I’m Wrong

Feelings that everyone’s livin,’
To a different kinda wall.
I feel nano sense skipping,
Tangled up in my own thoughts.

‘Harley on’, they’re just rainin’,
Rest their motto, “wha’ we got?”.
Try to look into the mirror,
Scared of what I may find out.

I must believe,
I must believe.
I need to live,
Not just exist.

What if I’m wrong,
What if I’m wrong.
What did I know,
What if I’m wrong.

Why must these ‘specials’, have feelings,
Why must I live in inside.
I wrestle with my raging ailing,
Lately, I have lost my fire.

I must believe,
I must believe.
I need to live,
Not just exist.

What if I’m wrong,
What if I’m wrong.
What did I know,
What if I’m wrong.

What if I’m wrong,
What if I’m wrong,
Hold-a my hand.
Is the water so cold?

What if I’m wrong,
Is the water so warm?
It’s all that I know,
What have we sold?

What if I’m wrong,
What if I’m wrong.
What if I’m wrong,
What if I’m wrong.

Betcha By Golly Wow

There’s a spark of magic in your eyes
Candyland appears each time you smile
Never thought that fairy tales came true
But they come true when I’m near you
You’re a genie in disguise
Full of wonder and surpriseAnd betcha by golly, wow
You’re the one that I’ve been waiting for forever
And ever will my love for you keep growin’ strong
Keep growin’ strongIf I could I’d catch a falling star
To shine on you so I’ll know where you are
Order rainbows in your favorite shade
To show I love you, thinking of you
Write your name across the sky
Anything you ask I’ll try, `causeBetcha by golly, wow
You’re the one that I’ve been waiting for forever
And ever will my love for you keep growin’ strong
Keep growin’ strong

Betcha by golly, wow
You’re the one that I’ve been waiting for forever
And ever will my love for you keep growin’ strong
Keep growin’ strong

After a crazy weekend and Monday, I’m super late posting for Music Monday today. I probably should’ve skipped this week, but I’d like to share this song by Sia that I learned about recently after watching “My Little Pony: The Movie” with my kids. I fell in love with it right away. Sia’s voice just really gets into my soul and these lyrics are beautiful. Hope you enjoy.

Sia

“Rainbow”

Lyrics:
I know you

You’re a special one
Some see crazy, where I see love
You fall so long
But soar so high
Big dreamer, shoot for open sky
So much life in those open eyes
So much depth, you look forward to life
When your wounds open
You will cry
Cry, oh no, and you’ll question why

I can see a rainbow
In your tears as they’re fallin’ down
I can see your soul grow, uoo
Through the pain as they hit the ground
I can see a rainbow
In your tears as the sun comes out
As the sun comes out

I am here
And I see your pain
Through the storms
Through the clouds, the rain
I’m telling you
You cannot escape
You can do it
Just feel, baby

I can see a rainbow
In your tears as they’re fallin’ down
I can see your soul grow, uoo
Through the pain as they hit the ground
I can see a rainbow
In your tears as the sun comes out
As the sun comes out

Here comes the sun
Smiling down
Here comes the sun
Smiling down
Here comes the sun
Smiling now
Smiling now

I can see a rainbow
In your tears as they’re fallin’ down
I can see your soul grow, uoo
Through the pain as they hit the ground
I can see a rainbow
In your tears as the sun comes out
As the sun comes out
I can see a rainbow
In your tears as they’re fallin’ down
I can see your soul grow, uoo
Through the pain as they hit the ground
I can see a rainbow
In your tears as the sun comes out
As the sun comes out

Music Monday: Cake “Short Skirt Long Jacket”

Yesterday for Shabby Sunday I talked about an old vintage songbook that I still have from 1975. It belonged to my grandfather and he used to sing songs from it when I was a kid. I was reflecting back on some of the old music from his time and remembered how he mentioned multiple times that music had changed. He wasn’t pleased with very many new artists and when he didn’t have his favorites to listen to, he resolved to listening to only newer artists like Carole King or Amy Grant. After chatting with my friend and author David Dowdy, we got on the subject of music and how much it has changed. I got to thinking about this song by Cake, because in the video they’re walking around asking many different people to listen to their song and to give their opinion on it. Everyone seems to have their own tastes and there were some really funny reactions.

Cake

“Short Skirt Long Jacket”

I personally do feel more attached to the music from the 80’s and 90’s era because it’s music I grew up with and music that connects with many memories. So I have to ask all you music lovers what you think about new music. Are you more attached to older familiar music, or do you still connect with just as many new songs? In your opinion, does music in general have the same level of talent it once had?

Lyrics:

I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what’s best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes

I want a girl with the right allocations
Who’s fast and thorough
And sharp as a tack
She’s playing with her jewelry
She’s putting up her hair
She’s touring the facility
And picking up slack

I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnng jacket……

I want a girl who gets up early
I want a girl who stays up late
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity
Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass

She is fast and thorough
And sharp as a tack
She’s touring the facility
And picking up slack

I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnnng…. lonnng jacket

I want a girl with a smooth liquidation
I want a girl with good dividends
At Citibank we will meet accidentally
We’ll start to talk when she borrows my pen

She wants a car with a cupholder arm rest
She wants a car that will get her there
She’s changing her name from Kitty to Karen
She’s trading her MG for a white Chrysler LeBaron

I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnnggggggggg jacket

I finally went to the movie theater to watch Black Panther with my family. In the winter we only have one traditional theater close and it’s super old, like from 1936, but it always turns out to be a fun experience even without the stadium seating or huge screen. Right off the rip, I was greeted by this super cool slushy machine with the flavor titled ‘Panther Power’.

20180301_190304.jpg

I have to say that for the first 30 minutes or so I was thinking I might not like the movie, then it picked up with a ton of action and it kept my interest all the way the end. I really enjoyed the little bits of comedy and I thought the acting was spot on. There were a few quibbles for me, but for the most part I was pleased. Honestly, I was worried that the movie might’ve been over-hyped, but most of my family loved it too. It’s noticeable now that some people are leaving it negative reviews, but I would just suggest that you see it for yourselves and make your own judgement. 🙂

This Week’s Pick:

Bruce Hornsby and the Range

“The Way It Is”

I chose this song today because it’s special to me. It’s an important song concerning the Civil Rights Movement, racial injustice in America, and one that I’ve loved since the first time I heard it.

I’ve been playing piano since I was a little child and this is a song that even as a teen I always wanted to perfect on the piano. When I came of age, my mom took me to a casino (even though I had no interest in gambling) and on the way out, there was a band playing along with a piano player. The song they were performing was “The Way It Is” by Bruce Hornsby and I was instantly captivated. This guy was whaling out the song just like I always dreamed of playing it. We stood there waiting until the song was over and actually interacted with the band a little bit. It was amazing! It inspired me to go out and purchase more sheet music and to push myself harder. All in all, I found the atmosphere to be pretty amazing and it ended up being an awesome experience–one that I won’t ever forget.

Music, at its essence, is what gives us memories. And the longer a song has existed in our lives, the more memories we have of it. –

This week’s pick:

Ugly Kid Joe

“Cats in the Cradle”

I started thinking about this song recently when I was chatting with my friend Nel about time and how it’s worth more than gold. Now that I’m older, and a parent, every extra thing I do in my life is time away from my kids. It’s often on my mind because I want to savor every moment I have with them. I know that one day our life roles will switch, as kids are only kids for so long. I hope, when that time comes, I will have been the best mom I could’ve been.

This song was originally by Harry Chapin and was inspired by a poem his wife wrote. There were a few lyrical changes by Ugly Kid Joe including “man on the moon” and also the lack of an apostrophe in the title.

This week’s pick:

INXS

“New Sensation”

I never get tired of listening to INXS. This one reminds me of spring and a fresh change. I picked this song today after hearing it on one of my favorite documentaries that I watched for the umpteenth time this weekend during my Netflix marathon. Here’s the trailer if you haven’t seen “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” yet. The second documentary is also enjoyable and shares Joe’s progress and includes other updates from the first film.

Song Lyrics:

Live baby live
Now that the day is over
I gotta new sensation
In perfect moments
Well so impossible to refuse

Sleep baby sleep
Now that the night is over
And the sun comes
Like a god into our room
All perfect light and promises

Gotta hold on you
A new sensation, a new sensation
Right now gonna take you over
A new sensation, a new sensation

Dream baby dream
Of all that’s come and going
And you will find out in the end
There really is,
There really is no difference

Cry baby cry
When you got to get it out
I’ll be your shoulder
You can tell me all
Don’t keep it in ya

Well that’s the reason why I’m here
Hey hey
Are you ready for a new sensation, new sensation
Right now
Gonna take you on a new sensation, new sensation
A new sensation, a new sensation
A new sensation

Hate baby hate
When there’s nothing left for you
You’re only human what can you do
It’ll soon be over
Don’t let your pain take over you

Love baby love
It’s written all over your face
There’s nothing better we could do
Than live forever
Well that’s all we’ve got to do
Hey now I’m gonna take a new sensation, a new sensation
Right now
Gotta hold on you
A new sensation, a new sensation
A new sensation, a new sensation
A new sensation

This week’s pick:

Bruce Springsteen

“Streets of Philadelphia”

I picked this song today because it’s always been a favorite and came to mind after having a conversation with my wonderful friend Nel. We were talking about emotions and got into the topic of emotional movies. She did an awesome post recently titled Emotional Torture on her blog Reactionary Tales. Be sure to check it out.

One of my favorite movies, Philadelphia, stars Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Antonio Banderas, and Mary Steenburgen, to name a few. Tom Hanks acts as Andrew Beckett, a homosexual male hiding his HIV condition from his employers at a huge Philadelphia law firm. A few of the partners at the firm discover the signs that he has AIDS and he’s then fired. He searches for help, eventually calling upon Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), a homophobic lawyer. He and his lawyer sue the law firm for discrimination. This movie was inspired by a true story and it’s one if the most emotional movies I’ve seen. It’s also one of the first Hollywood films to shed light on AIDS and homophobia.

“If you ever want to have a great moment in a motion picture, walk out a door and make sure they just put up a Bruce Springsteen song.” – Tom Hanks

Lyrics:

I was bruised and battered, I couldn’t tell what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
Saw my reflection in a window and didn’t know my own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me wastin’ away
On the streets of Philadelphia

I walked the avenue, ’til my legs felt like stone,
I heard the voices of friends, vanished and gone,
At night I could hear the blood in my veins,
It was just as black and whispering as the rain,
On the streets of Philadelphia

Ain’t no angel gonna greet me
It’s just you and I my friend
And my clothes don’t fit me no more,
A thousand miles
Just to slip this skin

Night has fallen, I’m lyin’ awake,
I can feel myself fading away,
So receive me brother with your faithless kiss,
Or will we leave each other alone like this
On the streets of Philadelphia Continue reading “Music Monday: Bruce Springsteen “Streets of Philadelphia””

I was chatting with my friend Nel about some of the music we grew up with and some of the artists our parents listened to, when Phil Collins came up. I ❤ Phil Collins. I started thinking about some of my favorite songs and ended up going with “Take Me Home.” It’s hard to believe this song came out when I was just 9 years old, which explains why it’s so nostalgic to me. Here it is…

Phil Collins

“Take Me Home”

The song isn’t about a man returning home as many think, but the lyrics actually refer to a patient in a mental institution. Apparently, Phil Collins got his inspiration from the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Lyrics:

Take that look of worry
I’m an ordinary man
They don’t tell me nothing
So I find out what I can
There’s a fire that’s been burning
Right outside my door
I can’t see but I feel it
And it helps to keep me warm
So I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind

Seems so long I’ve been waiting
Still don’t know what for
There’s no point escaping
I don’t worry anymore
I can’t come out to find you
I don’t like to go outside
They can’t turn off my feelings
Like they’re turning off a light
But I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind
Oh I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind

So take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home
Oh Lord, ’cause I’ve been a prisoner all my life
And I can say to you

Take that look of worry, mine’s an ordinary life
Working when it’s daylight
And sleeping when it’s night
I’ve got no far horizons
And I wish upon a star
They don’t think that I listen
Oh but I know who they are
And I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind
Oh I, I don’t mind
No I, I don’t mind

So take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home, oh lord
Well I’ve been a prisoner all my life
And I can say to you

But I don’t remember
Take, take me home
‘Cause I don’t remember
Take, take me home…

I started listening to Deftones sometime around the mid 90s and I quickly became enraptured by Chino Moreno’s voice and their unique sound. They’ve been a favorite ever since. I had a hard time picking just one song, but went with “Digital Bath.” Hope you enjoy.

“Digital Bath”

LYRICS

You move like I want to
To see like your eyes do
We are downstairs
Where no one can see
New life break away

Tonight
I feel like more
Tonight I

You make the water warm
You taste foreign
And I know you can see
The cord break away
‘Cause tonight
I feel like more

Tonight
I feel like more
Feel like more

Tonight

You breathed
Then you stopped
I breathed
then dried you off

And tonight
I feel, feel like more
Tonight I feel like
Feel like more

Tonight I feel like more
Feel like more

Tonight
