Wednesday’s Breakfast and a Book – Green Juice – Lou Corona’s Lemon Ginger Blast with Thai Coconut

It’s going to be a great day! I’m so excited to share with you one of my all time favorite green juice recipes! Today’s breakfast is a meal replacer which is a mix of green juice called the Lemon Ginger Blast and Gorilla Milk. I’ll show you how to make the green juice first and then the Gorilla Milk.

One of my favorite raw food advocates is Dan Mcdonald. Some of you may already know him from his videos on YouTube. I’ll be doing a post on him soon with some of my favorite Liferegenerator recipes. He’s changed so much over the years and has become so much more professional making his own raw food DVD’s and selling raw food essentials. It’s because of Dan that I found this recipe in the first place. He was doing a segment with Lou Corona, another raw food advocate who’s been eating raw food for years and repaired his body by eating nothing but raw food. LEMON GINGER BLAST

 

There are many different recipes out there which alternate ingredients. I find myself modifying it to fit what I have on hand. It’s always green, but you may find that you want to omit something. Today I’m going to use Kale. Next time I may use Dandelion greens. It doesn’t matter! 😉

I have kale growing in the garden and heading out to the garden as the sun is rising is one of the most fun things to do. I go out very early and pick my veggies.

It’s so easy to grow your own kale at home. Kale is one of those vegetables you should buy organic and it’s not always easy to find. Grow your own in your garden or even in a pot. It’s so simple. You don’t have to use pesticides. This is Red Russian Kale and it’s delicious and beautiful. You can use it to make kale chips as well. I’ll be posting my favorite kale chip recipe soon.

The Immune System Recovery Plan by Susan Blum, M.D., M.P.H. & Saturday’s Special -Stew-

A few years ago I started doing a ton of research on how I could stop my immune system from killing me. I wound up purchasing a myriad of books ranging from cookbooks to self-help books and even books by authors telling their own stories on how they cured themselves. I was on a mission and came across some really great books that helped me get my mind in order. I will have a post in the future which outlines everything that I’ve done to keep myself healthy. For now, you can read about one of my favorite books that I keep on my kitchen shelf.

The Immune System Recovery Plan by Susan Blum, M.D.,M.P.H. is the one I’ll be covering today. You can see my review below as well as my favorite recipe from the book which I make all the time.

The Immune System Recovery Plan by Susan Blum is one of a myriad of books I purchased after I was diagnosed with not one, but two serious autoimmune disorders. I was on a mission to cure myself and this book was just one of my tools.

The book is a doctor’s 4-step plan to overcome autoimmune disease. The author, Susan Blume, was suffering from an autoimmune disease and shares with readers what she believes are the answers to living a healthy life after autoimmune disease.

The four step plan includes: 

  • Using food as medicine – I believe this is a proven method in my own case. The author offers self assessments for foods that can trigger issues with our bodies and helps create a plan for discovering these food sensitivities. She also covers the “good stuff” and highlights a healthy diet by telling readers what they should eat with recipes included.
  • Understanding the stress connection – It’s no surprise that in our world, people are stressed. It’s known to cause scads of issues including some less serious symptoms like fatigue to more serious diseases like autoimmune disease and cancers. The key is removing the inflammation from our bodies by destressing our lives, something many people could benefit from. How stressed are you? Take the self assessment to find out your stress number. This section includes some recipes to help counteract stress as well.
  • Healing your gut – This section covers the importance of intestinal bacteria and what happens when your flora is out of order. She covers leaky gut and how we can heal our digestive tracts. There are more self assessments and a treatment program included with recipes.
  • Supporting your liver – In this section you will learn all about toxins and how our livers simply can’t keep up with the amount of toxins we ingest everyday from our skin, breathing, eating and drinking. The author covers some of the most problematic toxins and discusses how to remove them from our bodies. Another self-assessment is offered which will help you discover if you’re dealing with toxic overload.

This book, in my opinion, would be good for anyone suffering disease in general. The steps that she outlines including healing the gut and supporting the liver can make anyone feel better and will also help to ward off disease before it strikes. I love most of the recipes in the book and use them on a regular basis. My rating on this one is:

Wednesday’s Breakfast and a Book

This morning’s breakfast is a simple smoothie called “The Green Monster.” This is similar to the Vita-mix version taste wise and you’ve probably sampled if you visit Costco during the demonstrations for Vita-mix blenders. It’s a very easy way to get your greens because spinach has such a mild flavor and paired with the oranges-you can’t even taste it.

One of my first jobs as a teen was working at an Orange Julius restaurant. I loved working there and enjoyed most of the smoothies on the menu. The standard Orange Julius was one of my favorites. This smoothie is similar depending on how much sweetness you add to it. Orange Julius uses processed sugar and powder compounds in their smoothies. This is a much healthier option using all fresh ingredients!

This Green Monster has a ton of orange flavor and makes about 4 servings. When replacing a meal, I usually drink close to 32 ounces.

Here’s the recipe:

1/2 cup almond milk

3 oranges peeled – Use only 2 oranges if you want it thicker

2 handfuls of spinach ( If you want to use kale, that’s fine too, but much stronger flavor)

Stevia to taste

1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

At least 1 cup of ice

(an option is also to add in a frozen banana.)

Tips:

The easiest way to prepare the oranges for the blender is to cut off both ends and use a sharp knife to cut along the outside of the orange leaving as much pith (white) as you can. You’ll lose the top pith, but there’s plenty on the sides.

Why?

  • When you remove pith, you’re taking away 30% of the fiber.
  • It’s loaded with antioxidants (amazing cancer fighters.)
  • Vitamin C- by including the pith, you’ll double the vitamin C in the smoothie.

Juicing for Health!

It’s no secret that eating fruits and vegetables can help us maintain a healthy body, but would you believe me if I told you that they can save your life? It happened to me…

As a teen I remember my grandfather buying me one of Jack Lalanne’s first juicers called the Juice Tiger.

From a young age I had an interest in health and staying fit, but my issue was always having an addiction to all the wrong foods. Even though I was trying to eat right I would sometimes fall back into old habits.

As life moved on and I started working full time jobs it was common to eat out and grab whatever I could get my hands on. One of my first jobs was right next to a Greek restaurant which was a huge curse. I was able to order fried chicken, lemon rice soup and had an endless supply of all the rice pudding with whipped cream that I wanted.

I felt healthy and happy for the most part, but started experiencing horrible fatigue. It didn’t matter how much I slept. I would walk around feeling like I had a thousand pounds on my shoulders all day long.

Years went by and I was finally diagnosed with my first autoimmune disease. I didn’t have a clue what was going on and my doctor didn’t explain to me that my disease was most likely caused by the combination of poor diet, the environment, and my family genetics.

So, I chose to try and help myself by changing my diet. I began juicing again, eating more fruits and vegetables and making smoothies. Healing Lyme Disease Naturally: History, Analysis, and Treatments by Wolf Storl

Healing Lyme Disease Naturally  by Wolf D. Storl is a book about Lyme Disease and how to achieve a total cure naturally.

I picked this up because we recently had a pediatric case in our family that needed attention. After visiting multiple doctors, we were told the only way to battle the disease was to take a 21 day course of antibiotics and retest a few months later. We noticed even after the antibiotics, there was still something brewing as symptoms would occasionally reappear. After researching myself and reading this book, I believe now that antibiotics are not the answer for everyone. People react differently to the disease.

What I love about this book is that the author has a story to tell about his own experience and how he treated himself. He covers many methods of natural cures including Chinese Medicine, spiritual guidance, and plant use to name a few. There’s a section pertaining to just the healing plants with descriptions for each. Many of the plants Mr. Storl deems useful are plants that we already had growing in our gardens. Typical plants like teasel, yarrow, elderberry, coneflower, and lemon balm are just some of the plants used as powders and teas. The book also covers the history of the disease, ticks and the different diseases they transmit, and information on bacteria and how it survives. It offers methods of protecting yourself from ticks, and how to keep your body healthy with diet and exercise.
